YBR fork compression noise fail MOT?

Hey guys, so in my previous post people pointed out a number of things that could make the fork squeak, oil change, new steals and spring type issues were all possibilities.

My question is would it be an MOT failure or advisory?
The sound doesn't sound like metal and the seals don't leak and there is still a springy feeling.

I was thinking of taking it for MOT today at around 2pm so would be great if I got some info by then

As long as they are smooth and not leaking/weeping, I can't see why you would fail. An advisory, yeah, probably.

Even if you do get an advisory, it's just that - advisory.

As long as the fork seals aren't leaking, they operate smoothly and damp correctly then you'll be fine. Thumbs Up

You can do most of the MOT child checks yourself, before you take it in. It's cheaper than failing Smile.

Soo..... I decided to not do the M.O.T and stripped down both forks, first fork plenty of oil drained it , the first bit was super clean, which made me think it has been changed fairly recently. Then all of a sudden there was think black sludge!!!

I cleaned everything and kept everything in order. Then took the second fork apart. WELL ........ this is where it gets interesting. The squeaking sound was from the result of the fork being bone dry!!!!!!

Due to there being nothing but the slightest drop of oil on the damper seal the spring and spacer etc were rubbing.

The previous owner must have ran out of fork oil or something ....... I have owned the bike for just under a month now and been fixing bits here and there ready for MOT, but dam...WHO ONLY FILLS ONE FORK!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Shocked

Thought I'd give an update so if anyone wanted to know what it was.

Nobody fills one fork, what you have is a blown seal that has leaked out it's contents.

Groaning forks are a classic sign that one or both have no oil in them, along with a bump test, showing a lack of damping and/or some stiction.

Dont just fill it, change the seal or you will be back to square 1 and fail the mot anyway for visible leakage.

Good effort for actually stripping them and finding out though Thumbs Up

That's the idea , fill the legs, and then see if you have a leaking seal, not just dive in and rip the legs to pieces

For the cost and effort involved, I'd strip the forks, clean the crap out and fit new seals and dust seals. If the seal has been running dry I wouldn't trust it to last or even be any good in the first place.
