£20 more worth of oil every 20,000 miles to protect £2,000 worth of engine? I'll choose the £20 option thanks.
Each to their own, but calling someone a fool for not sticking to a long term service plan, purely designed to make lease cars more appealing to the lease hire firm, is a bit foolish too IMO. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

I ran my last BMW E34 to 275K and drove it onto the scrap lorry, my current E38 is over 200K already. Mind you, I don't wait 20,000 miles to remove the contaminated oil.
Each to their own, but if your car has 2 settings within BMW's INPA software and most enthusiasts choose the lower interval, you have to ask yourself why.
There is no question that oil will pick up contaminates and no question that leaving them in contact with the engine internals for twice as long, will cause twice the wear. |
Read up on modern engine design and lubricant.
Synthetic multigrade oil stays 'in-grade' much longer than 'traditional' oils do.
Modern Diesel fuels 'refined in the West' contain less sulphur than previously.
The reasons oil is changed is to restore the oils mechanical properties and it chemical composition.
There is not a Setting to determine when the oil is changed in my car. It says in the owners hand book and by the service computer.
Are you the type who will change oil when 'it looks black'? 😊 |
I'll say it again as you appear to have ignored it...

Fill your boots, but for the sake of a £6 oil filter and £2 worth of oil every 1,000 miles, instead of £1 worth, I'll go for the short term service plan personally. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

There should not be any metal particles in the oil apart from microscopic particles.

Engines wear, metal particles get through the filter.
Leaving this contaminated oil in twice as long will cause more wear. Fact.
You're trying to justify your own long interval services. Fine, but let's not try to pretend an engine wont last longer on the shorter service interval with more regular oil changes eh?
We live in an era where more and more new cars on the road are only owned/rented by the same person for 3 years at most. Being able to sell the package with half the servicing costs helps new sales, not the long term wear and tear on the engine.
I know several mechanics now blaming long interval servicing as the main reason behind the recent increase in so many premature EGR, DPF and Turbo failures on modern diesels.
For the sake of an extra £25 every 10,000 miles or so, I'd rather not take the risk. That's my choice. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

I don't have to justify anything.
I didn't make that shit up.
You change your oil when you feel like it is due. Cool.
I am only saying it is a redundant service.
Let it run to the recommended interval and do it then.
I bet the manufacturers have vastly more experience of this shit than you personally do.
But then you are free to do as you wish. |
In your opinion. You trust manufacturers to make cars last forever, so they never sell new ones.
It's in their financial interest to sell more cars. As most new cars are not bought by private buyers anymore, they can flog more by stretching out the service intervals, to make them more appealing in the first three years of ownership by lease hire firms.
Even if this stretching of service intervals has a detrimental affect on the longevity of the car 10 years down the road.
Manufacturers are constantly changing service intervals, usually when they realise that they've pushed it too far and had too many failure rates. Why do you think that might be, considering once out of warranty, it's not their problem?
