In Lincoln Bikes can cross a couple of meters of pavement to share a Pushbike rack/area on a wide section of pavement and yet in another part of the city (identical type of access/area) they are can't. There is no difference in signage and the only reason I know the difference is I asked a traffic warden. He couldn't explain it and just said you will get a ticket in one place and not the other???

Surely the obvious thing is just don't get caught.

Don't think it's legal to ride on any pavement. Possibly depends on a dropped kerb though.

We have specific motorbike bays in the centre of MK but I have also seen bikes parked up by cycle stands without tickets and heard of people getting tickets, much like the OP said. There aren't any 'No Motorbike' signs on the bike ones the last time I looked.

It seems purely down to what sort of parking bloke is in that area at that time.

Is the contentious issue here the actual place where you're parking (pushbikes and motorbikes being different things), or the fact that you have to cross a pavement with a motor vehicle to access the space?

Is there an actual rule about this? I have to cross a pavement to access the hard standing for my cars or the garage for my bike. It's not a lowered curb as such either, just all the curbs on this estate are angled.

Like this...

They are getting very heavy with parking on pavements round here but that's not the same thing really.

Having just looked it up - actually no, it appears not:

It is not an offence under this section to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle on any land within fifteen yards of a road, being a road on which a motor vehicle may lawfully be driven, for the purpose only of parking the vehicle on that land

All you've found out is that parking ghoul is more likely to ticket you in one place than another. It doesn't mean that there's any actual reason for it, or that it will apply to any other ghoul, or even to that ghoul if his missus is on the rag or he's down on his quota.

The issue isn't riding on the pavement (although I've been told a similar lie by the local ghouls), it's where the bike is parked.

If you actually want opinions on that, let's see some streetview links.

Looks like Lincoln Council do offer dedicated motorcycle parking, but they also want you to pay for it too, how very dare they

https://www.lincoln.gov.uk/living-in-lincoln/transport-travel-and-parking/parking/motorcycle-parking/

And that is pretty much all the info they give you on motorcycle parking

Over where i live & work in Chesterfield/Sheffield, all the council run car parks where motorcycle bays are present are all free (even if there are only a few of them)

Lincolnshire are meant to be promoting bikes and have a scheme to assist youngsters getting started. The growbags cant get buses from the backwaters and to encourage apprenticeship and college attendance they give them a helping hand. But once they've got them all nice and trained and legal they charge them for parking in Lincoln to attend college then? If they want to promote bikes for young people and to help congestion it should follow that parking should be free???

I don't use it, haven't tried it.

I just dump my bike on the pavement so it's out of the way, never had a ticket.

I seem to remember a conversation around 15 years ago with a traffic warden in Manchester, I'd asked about parking and he said they don't ticket bikes so long as they're not obstructing.

Things may have changed since.

Yes.

It's called Google Maps and you can use it to give us links to the two pavement parking places.

The chances are the different parking rules will be easily explained if you just show the locations to us.

Without Google Maps links, every single answer you get is just guess work. With Google Maps links, you'll quickly get an accurate answer.

Why do people insist on making things so difficult for themselves? Laughing

There is a separate law for Greater London that bans pavement parking by a motor vehicle there.
