I'm looking to swap out my Kenda knobblies for some narrower road going Shwalbe Marathon.
The Kendas are 42 but the Shwalbe will be 32, will my tubes be ok?

Depends which tube is in there, they tend to cover a range of sizes. As with most things bicycle, there isn't any real standardisation so it depends if the ones you have are towards the top or bottom of the range that particular brand covers. It may or may not say on them.

If you can stuff them in there, they should be ok. If there's all bits hanging out the sides, you probably need smaller ones.

Broke your fingers??

C'mon, spill the beans. Surely didn't run out of grip on a pair of Marathons?

No no, it's just the reassurance from Ste makes me pre-empt disaster.

Fitted new rubber earlier, it's beginning to look a bit swish.
I've not ridden on them yet bit I can imagine I'll be a tad quicker.

Literally, I reckon you'll start spinning out on it in top gear and need a bigger chainring. Remember the rules. It only gets faster, not easier.

The lower rolling resistance notwithstanding, your lower profile tyres have just reduced the effective wheel diameter by a fair bit so it'll not only be easier to pedal, it'l also be slightly lower geared.

Ah ok. Makes sense.
My Mrs is gonna love the extra expense.

Tbh, I haven't really used the biggest front cog yet.
My usual route is quite short and the middle cog has been sufficient so far.
I don't really get the chance to get any serious speed up.

I will update on my findings in due course.

Went for a spin on my usual route, the fastest section was just under 5mph faster with the new tyres and that was with a bit of a headwind.
I hadn't been out for a while so my overall time wasn't my fastest.
And yes, I got on the big cog.

I've got "Terrainasaurus" tyres on my hybrid, not sure they make them anymore.

Basically look like this;
https://www.wtb.com/products/all-terrain

debating switching the tyres, though not sure how much difference it will make, I mean my average speed might go up, but the effort I put in through the pedals probably won't change, would it?

Also, I do ride on some pretty crappy cycle paths, and gravel tracks from time to time.

My wife rode a fixie with Michelin city tyres and moustache handlebars round the perimeter road of Keilder Water.

As long as you're not in actual deep mud, normal road tyres are perfectly fine. No problems on gravel tracks and crappy cycle paths.

The Schwalbe Marathons recman has on are what you'll find on every round the world/pan-American/long distance bike.

Those are the two I like for general purpose bicycles. Schwalbe Marathon for preferrence (not cheap) or Michelin City for cheapness. Both are pretty puncture resistant too. The marathons more-so.

Useless fact of the day: Boris bikes used to use Schwalbe Marathon tyres.

I say used to use, I don't know if they still are.
