When I say planned, I mean "idea conceived and intention in place"

All advice welcomed. Very broadly thinking of going from London to South Wales (possibly with a pal who is heading that way to do one of those off road classes) then fished ferry to Ireland, loop around the west, come back into Holyhead and down through Snowdonia.

If you don’t fancy the full motorway slog you could use the A40 Oxford to Cheltenham go down by Birdlip to Gloucester and across to Ross on Wye. There depending on where you’re going you can either head down to Monmouth and then use the A466 through the Wye valley and tintern which leads down to Chepstow.....or from Ross on Wye head down the B4521 on the old Ross Rd to Abergavenny which sets you up nicely for the Brecon Beacons.

Ride time from Kensington to Birdlip is around 2 hours 15.

North Wales - B4391. You will not regret it.

Start on the A483 at Llynclys, go past Llangynog getting an awesome view as you climb up the hill, over the tops to Bala then A4212 to Trawsfynydd, up the A470 to Betws-y-coed, A5 over to Tyn-y-Celyn near Corwen, up to Llanfair DC, the Nant-y-garth pass, then the horseshoe pass.

Aww... but all the pics have been phukked up by photobucket... you need to do the bodge of adding "~original" to all the URLs... like this:

(Please do - looks an interesting trip! Thumbs Up )

I was sufficiently interested to plot this on Google Maps, as I'm currently sussing out routes around Wales to go and play on when this effing weather improves!

However... the A5 out of Betwys-y-Coed takes you northwest towards Bangor on the coast, from where you take the A55 up to Tyn-y-Celyn... is that what you meant, or did you mean '...continue up the A470 out of Betwys-y_Coed directly north to Tyn-y-Celyn'?

Both will work obvs, but I don't know either road and as this is purely for fun I wouldn't mind knowing the preferred route... Wink

Google Maps

Wrong Tyn-y-Celyn (It's Wales, this happens more than you would think). Your route is longer and also great fun, but be aware the north part of the A470 (Betws-y-coed to Conwy) is notorious for weekend warriors and positively crawls with dibble in the summer. Link is a modified (even longer) route that avoids that and gets some amazeballs mountain views. Onbiously, it's higher up, so if it is bad weather, you may want to reconsider.

Ah - I missed out the crucial "near Corwen", didn't I?! Thanks for that, and for the revised route too. Might give it a miss this weekend I think though...

Might be a touch slippery - Horseshoe pass is closed, which is a shame, it's awesome up there when it's snowy.
