Falling out of a shed clearance, when I was 11, I started pedaling it up and down the drive, and was told "If y'cun fix it, y'cun 'av it!" An hour later, having tipped some fresh petrol out of the lawn mower-can into it, and ripped off all the lights, and hence, inadvertantly the shorting 'kill' switch wire, it was a runner..... unfortunatley it wasn't a 'stoppa' causing much consternation when some-one discovered you cant 'stall' a twist and go, and even more when an older but not much wiser fellow, 'tutted' and promptly electroculted themselves trying to pull the spark-plug cap off!! HOURS of entertainment that 'ped provided!!!
https://www.scooterhelp.com/scooters/images/V9A1T.smalldoor.jpg
Same garage clearance unearthed one of these; A Vespa 90, unseremoniosely dumped after some-one had stoved in the 'fork' in a SMIDSY.
Learning thier leson with the Batavas Go-Go, they did NOT suggest if I could fix this one, I could have it.... but I did anyway! Finding a new fork that had at some-point been procured for it, and then used as a pipe-bender!?!?!? I set about trying to make it a go-er.... I got it running, again with a little fresh petrol and a little tinkering with wires... putting the replacement fork on proved a little more vexatiouse... I dont think I had two ball-bearings the same size! But it sort of looked like a skootah.. so I set about finding a front wheel for it.. which I eventually tracked down to my Grandad's wheel-barrow..... and things WERE looking promicing until there was an explosion of expletives from the shed, and a demand I STOP pigging about with stupid-skoota's, and FIX THE FRIGGING WHEEL-BARROW!
https://i.pinimg.com/564x/20/89/72/2089724a1ce0882a06c238e5ce35f808--barracuda--life.jpg
This is a BSA c15 'Baracuda'. I think the one I was given, in an attempt to keep me occupied, was a plain C15 with some Baracuda bits and other go-fast goodies... ~I was faithfuly promiced.... it had a glass-fibre tank, I do recall, and I was told a lumpy cam and 'big-valve' head.... which when lifted proved to be rather mangled by the high-crown High-Compression piston, also fitted, and probably groseely mis-timed, in an attempt to 'Cafe-Racer' it in the 250 L-Plate days..... Also told it was a perfect candidate for a competition 'Trials' chop... I had gone to Casablanca for the waters, rather!!!! It NEVER ran, but it WAS a real motor-bike.... ish! Sort of! If you squinted and used a LOT of imagination!
https://toastywithbeer.96.lt/images/pics/devils_bridge_e.jpg
Feeling guilty... but not very.. I was next bequithed another 'project' in one of these. A 1977 air-cooled, two-stroke twin, Yamaha RD250.... "Well, y'cun fix't'up fur y'16th" I was told.... by some-one who had sort of 'forgotten' that not only had 16 year olds been restricted to mopeds over a decade earlier, 17 year old learner's had been limited to 125's for almost half as long!
BUT!!! It was a proper motor-bike, and eventually IT RAN! Badly! Some-one had had daft ideas about tuning it, so when it did run, it only ran on one of its two cylinders, till it hit 6K rpm, then it went wherever it wanted, rather quickly!
SO! Concluding that 'Groan-upz-LIE' I decided to ignore them all! And I bought one of these:-
https://www.southwestmontesa.com/images/gal_248.jpg
A 1981 Montesa 248 competition trials bike. It had one 'day-light' MOT that had just expired when I got it, so dating the bike, and purchase to February 1985. It was a full 250, 'clubman' trials bike, and a little regulation digging had revealed I could ride it in competition the year I would turn 16.. and since I turned 16 much later that year... I DID!
Handing over a life-times savings from mowing lawns and stuff, I got it home and stunned the family expecting another 'project' cos it RAN! And was actually newer than my Grandad's car!
It was the my first 'Proppa' bike, as in it WAS a bike, AND it actually ran, AND I could actually ride the chuffing thing 'some-where'!
And THIRTY-ODD YEARS ON... I STILL have it!
And it's a 'project'!!!!!!! It has actually been hard used in clubman and later 'classic' competition, but right now, time has caught up with it, and it's been so hacked and bashed from original, it's a bit of a dilemah whether to 'restore', which to factory standard would probably be financially impractical if not physically impossible, or just 'renovate' to ONE of the guises it actually ran in over its competition career... and along the way? How many of the 'mods' I never got round to trying out might I work into the 'Project'... so its a hanging one..... Especially, as IF I ever go back to the sport, I am no old enough to run a modern 'banana-bike' in the old fogey class, and those fly-weight things are Soooooooo easy to ride in comparison! So why make life harder than I need?
https://www.sportbikerider.us/Pics41/1990-Kawasaki-AR125-192383.jpg
First 'Road-Bike', was one of them. A 1990 Kawasaki AR125, bought brand new, with my grant-cheque, cos with the launch of the Yamaha TZR125, they were offering a healthy discount on them, and I needed cheap and reliable wheels for a summer job.... so I ran it through uni for almost 3-years, while they sorted out the 'new' persuit-test.. or more precisely got some examiners who could do it! In between it being nicked, and the HP agreement running out, and getting my full-licence on it... JUST in time for Norwich Union to refuse insurance policies to any-one under 25! (Let alone some-one under 25 with three total loss theft claims on a brand new bike!!!).... But I still Had the Montesa...... oh, and another 'project-bike', a 1983 Honda CBX550 with snapped cam-chain, sat in the garage....... oh the errors of 'yoof'! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I had a H reg Honda NS125R in red. Not unlike this, but it had a black seat as the original red seat cover was torn, so I replaced it. A previous owner had resprayed the wheels black, as with this one.

I'm here by mistake i.e I couldn't afford a car so my uncle said 'Why not have the old XL to get about on'.
Here it is moments after my first ride.
https://i.imgur.com/HfFyom5.jpg
Minging November evening..I'd not ridden a bike since trying a PW80 sometime in the 80s and sitting on a 1300 Zed.
I asked how to start it and about the gears...a while later I got back grinning like..well like we all did after out first ride on our first bike.
Took that photo and been smitten since.
I still don't own a car. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

12 years old and got myself a Honda C50 for £3 and a fishing reel. It didn't run which was the only reason me and my Dad managed to get my Mum to agree to me having it "Look love, it doesn't run, you know the lad likes engines and engineering and stuff, why not let him have it and take it apart, learn how it works". Cheers Dad!
A week later after stripping and re building the top end with no manual it was locked solid, "Go and buy a manual so you can set the valve timing up properly you idiot" was my Dads wise advice. Another week and it was rebuilt again and my old man was sat on it at the top of the drive and I pushed him down the incline. He banged it into gear and it fired and shot off down the drive, throttle stuck wide open and no brakes, he managed to fling it onto the front lawn rather than shoot out onto the road, gouging out a big strip of pristine grass, knocking down two rose bushes and putting a crack it the wall. It was the first time I heard him swear "F**k it off across the fields" he said to my beaming face when I ran down the drive. The only way I could slow it down was to put my hand over the carb inlet and the only way to stop the engine was to pull off a bare copper plug cap, petrol, sparks, God knows how I didn't set myself on fire or electrocute myself.
First road bike was a DT50M in 1980.
First "proper" bike was a Yamaha 350N YPVS. ____________________ M.O.B. Successfully taking the piss since 2014. |

DT125E off road, then an MBX50 at 16, followed by a DT50MX, then borrowed a GS125 to pass my test and got an FZ750, which was a bit of an eye opener after 3.5bhp!
TPF&T insurance was over £1400 for the first year in the late 80's, the bike only cost me £1600. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.
