|
|
Hi all, new member here. Hopefully this will be a bit more fun than the usually 'What bike' threads.
Imagine you're moving to a circular island within the UK, 2 miles in diameter, with well surfaced, slow, roads. There are no dealerships, no repair garages, and no MOT requirement, though insurance and tax is still required and the laws regarding licences remain the same as the mainland. The bike will be kept on the road and used solely on the island, but any off roading is prohibited.
What bike would you buy?
For most of you reading this it may seem like an exercise for the imagination, but for me, it's not far from reality. |

Is there a theft problem on this island and are particular types of motorcycle disproportionately targetted? Do you have to pay to park? Are there regulations about the emissions this bike can put out?
Maybe you could get a major international corporation, like a bank or something, to sponsor a series of bicycles that are left about the place that people can use for a small fee. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

OK, let's also add:
When you need to shuttle about a dependant and you're tired of them almost being run over by crazy island drivers who've little to no driving experience.
How about strict time constraints? Or lots of hills? Or just imagine you're unable due to age/health? Any of those suffice as a need? I'm sure there are more reasons, but I'm running out of imagination.
|
If the local drivers are crazy I wouldn't be mad keen on taking a pillion anyway.
The time constraints point is moot - as I said, it'd take me almost as long to get geared up, ride the motorbike for two miles, then take my gear off at the other end, as it would to cycle the same distance.
Unless this tiny island happens to have a mountain in the middle of it I'm sure there wouldn't be enough hills, or hills so steep, in the space of two miles that a bicycle would be impractical.
If my age or health meant I was unable to cycle, I'd question whether I'd be in any state to ride a motorbike.
Sorry, but I genuinely can't think of any reason why I'd want a motorbike if I could only ever ride it for two miles. |

If it has to be a bike then a Triumph Scrambler but I think a bicycle might be less bother for the space you have. If you want to make a bicycle interesting buy a unicycle. |

'kin hell, BCF, why don't we just name the bike that OP has already decided on in order to justify his decision? This is the kinder, Googol friendlier BCF. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Don't tell OP, but my kneejerk answer for me based on the original problem would be an electric pedal cycle with a 2kW+ motor and no Rainpals®'s given about licence, VED or insurance.
Adding the belated requirement to take a passenger and not get murderkilled on the roads, I've probably suggest a Mini Moke. Because I am a free man, and I like my lulz. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
