Hello everyone,

First time post as I'm about to buy my first bike! However...

After passing my A2 I saw the examiner write 'A' on the Mod 2 certificate, rather than 'A2'. Obviously I didn't complain - maybe he just really liked my riding? - and I am now the proud owner of an unrestricted licence. I'm 25 so I'm allowed to have one, I'm just wondering if I'm likely to get in trouble if I go and buy something slightly above the A2 power range. Like are they likely to go through their records and find my Mod 1 certificate which says 'A2' on it?

I'm not looking for a beast, but some of the cheaper, old UJMs I want have lower capacity for a bit higher power. And I'd rather avoid ever taking the test again if I can avoid it.

Anyone with an experience/advice on this?

Cheers!

G

Just wondering why, at 25, you'd do A2 rather than A?

It says I have categories AM, A, K and Q - is that the final word on it then? Can't they dredge up my Mod 1 test certificate?

EDIT:

M.C - din't have any custard, also paranoid about DVLA seeing this

I should have said - started at 23, went to Japan for a year (where I turned 25), finished it when I came back and didn't want to take the CBT and Mod 1 again since I was broke. I didn't plan on it taking that long initially though!

That's the database they use.

Picture of the back of your photocard?

If you were taken to court for driving outwith the terms of your licence, that is your defence, it being your ACTUAL driving licence. Producing that in front of a magistrate would be a compelling defence for such a charge.

EDIT: Well, that looks like a full A-licence to me.

Winner. Enjoy your R1.

It has happened before IIRC, we just have an infestation of sock puppets round here.

What bike did you sit your test on?

Double check the DVLA website linked above to check for restrictions but it certainly looks full A to me.

It was a Yamaha XJ600 I think. Definitely not an A category bike. But I think I remember seeing that they count as A category bikes if they're not restricted. Maybe that's what fooled the examiner.

Test certificates are filled in by the DVSA.

Licensing is done by the DVLA.

The DVLA say you have full A, and the DVLA are never, ever wrong.

All queries about your licence status will go to the DVLA, not the DVSA. There is no reason for anyone to look any further, or suspect that anything's squiffy. I doubt that the DVLA even know when you passed module 1, let alone what category it was - that'll be in the DVSA records.

Fireblade, obviously.

[UPDATE]

That definitely an A bike, if not restricted. 595cc+, 40kW+. Rolling Eyes

Why would the examiner assume that it was restricted unless you told them so? You rock up on a 600cc+ bike, you're 24 or above, you're doing A. There's no reason for you to be doing A2.

Yeah, but can he weave a big boy bike round some cones? Folded arms It's amazing how often one has to do that during a typical ride. Wink

Just from seeing my mod 1 cert which was A2, so I'm glad he didn't look too closely. Well here's to the DVSA (for once)!

EDIT:

Any recommendations for the first bike would be welcome - budget is ideally sub-£1,000, £1,500 at a stretch, something around 600cc, cheap to insure and easy for me to fix/learn how to fix. I'm 6'2" and I want to use it for touring.

Late VFR750/Early VFR800?

Getting old so condition and mileage are critical. There will be some dross out there.

If anyone was interested, I bought this bike today:

https://78.media.tumblr.com/b859d14ca2fc3a4722abe213d75b9a7f/tumblr_p5v8muGCVo1wuihzbo1_400.jpg

Royal Enfield Bullet 500. Might raise some eyebrows but it's fun, does 80 mpg and I can fix and paint it myself, which is what I'm looking for. I think it will teach me a lot - no gadgets to help me out. Thanks for all your help again!

Not around here, we get the attraction of Enfields.

You might want to send yourself a telegram from the future (1970 or so) reminding you to brake about two weeks before you need to stop. Other than that (and oil starvation, and swiss cheese cylinder heads, and...) it'll be a lark.

Oh yeah, I already discovered the braking situation, luckily on a quiet road. Thought I'd mistakenly pressed the clutch instead. Aside from that and regularly ending up in a false neutral at 60mph, it's lots of fun.

My excuse is that I don't know any better (yet)
