Dear wise in all that is the world BCF....

The wife and i are invited to 3 weddings this year.
Yesterday she was out getting some frocks and stuffs, while i had a look at a couple of places for a new suit.

the bloke in Moss Bross was going out of his way to try and sell me a tailored suit.

Hmmmmm i have a few suits which are off the peg and i always felt that were a good fit, but it got me thinking..

is it worth it ?
i don't wear a suit for work and if it was required an off the peg would do.

How much is a sensible amount to spend ?
Where is a reputable shop to use ?

i did try to research on line but without either Roger or Ste, its difficult to know if its all bollocks or not.

Same arguments as custom made biker leathers.

Expensive, fit well but rely on you not getting fat or changing body shape and will look how you want them to look.

What you might want to do though is check where they actually make them. Quite a few of them will measure you take the order and send the order to somewhere in Asia.

Really depends upon your personal shape, and if you want specific extras/deletions (e.g. you may want a specific set/size of internal jacket pockets). It also gives more choice of style and fabric - if you go to M&S for example, there may be a cut you like but only in a fabric you dislike.

For infrequent use I probably wouldn't bother; especially if there is any likelihood that you'll change size over the next few years so it isn't a good long term investment.

Having said that, compared to the ladies spending £££ on a dress that only gets worn a few times a decent suit is good value.

If you get a good fitter they'll pick something off the shelf that nearly fits, and send it to the tailor for minor adjustments on the waist, legs, arms, etc. That kind of tailoring is worth it. You can totally see the difference in how the suit fits vs somewhere that just tailors leg length.

Getting a suit tailored from scratch is going to be a huge waste of money for you.

I was really happy with my suit from Moss Bros. Set me back about £350 and fits really well. Makes my £200 TM Lewin suit look like trash in comparison. Charles Tyrwhitt does some great non-iron shirts too, but never tried them for suits.

For something only worn 2 or 3 times a year it won't be worth spending much extra.
Body shapes change - not necessarily fatter - so it might need replacing or altering after a couple of years.

A few places will do tailoring of off the shelf suits for little extra cost, even free in some cases. I reckon I'm going to go down this route for my next suit.

Very much worth the extra cost to get a tailor made suit.

Try John-foster.co.uk and have a look at the fabric to buy online. (I used to work there and got a few suit lengths still waiting to be made up).

Finding a good local bespoke tailor is the key to getting a top notch suit made up.

Off the peg at Tesco or Sainsburys, no one will be looking at you. All eyes on the girl in white.

I like Slater's Menswear, pick something off the peg that you like and they normally do the alterations free to make sure it fits as it should.

M&S* sell suits as jackets and trousers separately meaning you can go for a 44 chest and 28 waist if that's how you're built. They also generally do different lengths of leg and torso/arm too.

Want a suit as a status symbol? Then Saville Row yourself something tailored. If you just want a vanilla suit that fits ok and you're an odd shape, M&S should do the job. I'm built like a gorilla (long arms, little legs) so M&S serves most of my suit requirements.

Get something off the peg and have it 'tailored' to fit.

No need for Made to measure unless you have one arm/leg significantly longer/shorter than the other two. FFS. Rolling Eyes
