What's done is done. Don't do it again if it's important to you / having an effect on your emotional state well after the event.

If you feel compulsive about it, then that should probably be looked at before it causes more problems.

It's simple, never bet with money you can't afford to lose. If you assume its lost to begin with, it's not a surprise if it happens.

Yes I lost a lot in one year, about four months salary. Luckily I made most of it back over the next nine months, but it was luck and mostly not enjoyable.
These days the amount I can "afford" to lose is so small I don't bother.
I was not gambling on sport, but gambling is gambling.

The whole idea of doing anything that can be called addictive is the high you get, whether it be gambling, drugs, booze, thrill seeking, shopping, etc.

The problem is there is always a low side to it (which makes the high even better when it happens). The depression when things don't work out. When you come off the drugs, when your credit card bill comes in after a shopping spree and when your banker bets fail.

They say admitting you have a problem is the first thing you have to do to get it under control and you seem the have done that and taken steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.

From someone who used to drink very heavily and (try to) hide it from my wife I would say (presuming you are in a relationship) tell her what you have done and what you are doing to stop it. Get her onside.

If she finds out you have lost a shitload of money herself she is going to be much less sympathetic than if you talk to her.

If you can stop gambling now then you haven't really got a problem (except being shit at football predictions). If you find yourself betting again, gamblers anonymous or whatever that organisation is called should be your next port of call.

Just to make you feel better, I know someone who lost over £30,000 in casinos over a short period of time!

Here endeth the sanctimonious ravings of an ex semi alcoholic. Thumbs Up

I feel guilty if I bet more than £2.50 Laughing

Only lost about £20 in 2 years though so meh. I don't bet for the money, it just makes watching it slightly more entertaining, maybe treat it that way rather than about money?

Football has been broken recently. Laughing

Stop chasing losses, you should only be staking a small percentage of your total pot. That is the way of the squirrel.

Something something, hush hush, secret squirrel. Shhh!

How good can you be at gambling?

I used to work with a guy who was the best fruit machine player I have ever known, I mean this bloke was a genius - we used to go out and play snooker after work, then our wives would come and meet us and, after a couple of drinks in the bar, he would win enough money to cover our meal for four.

All very good, but he was trying to wean himself off the machines, finding himself £52K in debt as a result of playing them obsessively; to put that into context, I had just bought a three bed house for £53K.

Similarly, I know another guy who is into gambling - when I say into, he's written books about it, advised governments on it and regularly appears on TV talking about it, he's what would be considered to be an expert.

His speciality is dog racing - he owns them, studies the form religiously and knows exactly how the game works. He reckons he just about breaks even most years, but he would've been in proper trouble, had his wife not died and left him a shittonne of money in the form of insurance and a transferable full salary pension (having said that, I haven't seen him for a couple of years, he might've pissed it all away by now).

The bottom line is, gambling is a losing game, so don't gamble more than you can afford to lose.

If he's just about breaking even most years then I'm not so sure he knows exactly how the game works.

If you're into dog racing and I told you his name, I guarantee you would know who he is and agree that he knows, but you can know all there is to know, what you can't do is legislate for bad luck or a run against the odds, that's when you lose big.

Sounds like a waste of time if he's about breaking even.

Tips for dogs in the group I'm in are about 80% successful. I don't like dogs or horses though.

Most I ever lost was £40 which I chucked on the grand national once for a laugh.

Never really understood addiction to be honest, even for physical things like drugs, booze, cigs etc, all of which I've been known to do excessively for extended periods of time. Stopping has always been easy. I guess I'm lucky in that regard.

If the average man could ultimately win at gambling there'd be no betting shops/websites.

I'm the same, I smoked for 9 years but after developing a cough I stopped and never smoked again. Didn't even think about it really, just stopped buying them.

Chickenfeed. My mum's the spieler in our family. Blew away over a million NZ dollars* (and that's the money I know about, god only knows what else she managed to get her sticky little mitts on Rolling Eyes ) - mostly on poker machines and horses, over the course of what I've estimated to be about 5 years. The original gambling grandmother Rolling Eyes

*somewhere between £330,000-£450,000

I think OP is bodytard. Quite a coincidence he should pop up in post 2 with one of his 'remarks' to throw us all off
the scent. Thinking Despite his well documented regular losses at the bookies. Thinking Thinking Thinking

I'll start betting when I start seeing skint bookies. There's ten branches of Paddy Power on every high street and gambling ads all over the telly. It's hugely lucrative on the other side of the counter.

Vegas too. An entire city of chintz built on suckers' gambling losses.

Remember, bookies don't rely on sports knowledge or mega prediction skills. They just set the odds based on money taken and hedge to ensure they always make a profit. If you're winning, the bookie isn't losing, some other punter is.

I do wonder how so many on line bookies keep going. On some tv channels thats all that are advertised later at night, online casinos and bookies. Shocked

It's all automated. No staff needed. As long as the odds are managed so you've always got a margin, it's just people logging in and giving you money.

Fixed odds betting terminals are worth megabucks to these guys but the diktat from above is to reduce the rate at which they gobble cash. They're also only allowed a certain number per establishment (which is why every second shop on the high street is another Coral). I'm sure there are pressure groups working on that but until then...

On-line gambling sites look after themselves. Costs are almost zero and they just hoover up cash from desperate drunk people who'd rather stay awake than risk the nightmares.
