It's called having self-control.

On-line gambling sites look after themselves. Costs are almost zero and they just hoover up cash from desperate drunk people who'd rather stay awake than risk the nightmares. |
A guy at work who did have a gambling problem said bookies offer free spins, and called it the crack cocaine of gambling. It does sound like a drug dealer giving out free samples. Another colleague tried to show me how he won at roulette, he disappeared from a job once and came back with £100. He promptly lost £20 and bailed, but the people in the shop were the same scummers trying to rob you in the street
With online roulette I noticed the 'practice' games paid out more to lure you in, even though skybet said they worked the same It's all sleazy, sure you'll get the people who place £2 bets and say it's their choice, but it's no coincidence poorer high streets are littered with betting shops. |

I did 4 days in Vegas in the Hard Rock Hotel as part of my honeymoon. Didn't know how to gamble so didn't. I don't
know any card games, I have no idea how to play roulette, I was just wandering around taken in by the 24hr lifestyle,
the flashing lights and how everybody seemed to be smoking but the place didn't even remotely smell of fags. Amazing! ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

If you spend long enough in a big casino, what you realise is that there's a weird electronic white noise that nobody really notices. Its notso much a hum of machines, its more of a sciencey-fiction kind of noise, a bit like that bleepy-bloopy section of the original Star Wars score. I think it lulls people into glassy-eyed complicity.
I don't spend much time in them, but when in Auckland I've been to the Harrah's Sky Tower for a meal or to while away a couple of hours here and there. Auckland has a HUGE oriental population these days, and the roulette tables there are thronging with frenzied orientals and they go all kinds of nuclear-level crazy at the dice tables.
The other addictive type (apart from my mother) is the Pacific Islanders: there's always rows of Samoan/Nuiean/Tongan aunties playing the 5-cent poker machines, sitting slumped in their slippers with their little canister of coins.
But I get bored after I've lost a certain amount. There's not enough to keep my attention. There's a decent buffet restaurant, though. My sister took me there for my birthday once or twice, the first time I ate so much pavlova that my liver has still not forgiven me.
I once picked up Jimmy Thomas, the old fella who bought the Hippodrome in London with his son, and turned it into a casino: right on the edge of Chinatown, it is. They were coining it before then - they must be rich as Croesus now ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Aren't there devices that tell you when a machine's due to payout? |
don't think they work, all snake oil and empty promises. might in theory have worked on a couple of machines
most modern fruit machines, come with a big owners manual,if you open up the back there is a small bank of switches to adjust settings, sound/tunes/volume/flashing lights in attract mode - and whilst you can't "fix" them, on many you can (or at lease you could) increase the odds of winning, from whatever the statutory minimum is (was?) up to 90 something %. I remember in the old working clubs, machines could be much more generous, than like machines in other places.
early one armed bandits were mechanical - SEGA amongst others used to make them, and on some of those, it was possible to tell if the next spin would win without inserting a coin - some people made money in Casinos doing this, and would get banned for doing it.
ps despite this big magnet I've put on the side of my computer, I've not managed to drag this thread into the Geek Zone. |

I had a pal back in London who was a carpenter, I was paying him to do a bit of work for me helping me fit a kitchen and
other joinery related tasks one Saturday. We had put in a long day but weren't quite done it was about 7pm and like the
post above he was being a bit distracted and antsy. He asked if we could nip to the shops, so I sad 'of course mate' and we
hopped in my van and we went to the nearby High st. He went to the cashpoint and computer said no (money) so he asked
if he could have an advance for what he was doing for me. I said 'Sure mate, how much do you want?' he asked for 30 quid
which I drew out and gave him. He walked straight into a nearby convenience store, for some tobacco or so I thought,
he came out with 30 quids worth of lucky dips for that nights lotto. Spent the lot when he was that skint himself that
he couldn't even get a tenner out. This guy has a wife and two kids, if I ever needed a lesson that gambling addiction
was just as serious as drug addiction which I have some personal experience of, then this was it. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

I lost £80 on gambling in total in my life.
£30 was lost on the Scottish independence referendum.
£50 was lost on the EU referendum.
I only bet to make it more interesting, and didn't necessarily bet on the same way that I voted.
It was good to try, but after that £80, I figured I'd cut my losses and don't gamble again.
I also didn't realise how people look down on gamblers until I told a coworker I put money on the referendum and lost. They were like "do you mean gambling? ". I think they were a chuch go-er type though.
My advice to OP is to consider that £800 as a life lesson not to gamble. Maybe for each month you don't gamble anything, you can treat yourself to something nice as a reward. |

When I was at sea on Hong Kong Chinese crewed ships the gambling on Mah Jong was horrendous at times.
This was back in the 80's and the crew were then doing 12 month trips and it wasn't unusual for crew members to ask to stay on for a second tour because of their gambling debts.
There were also a higher than normal (compared to every other nationality) loss of Chinese crew overboard and while it was never proven, many thought 'falling' overboard and not paying gambling debts were inter related.
One thing for sure, watching them play was amazing. Money everywhere.
So, don't bet with the Chinese! ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

A friend of mine has a system. £120k on his personal bankruptcy declaration and another £40k that he lost and already paid off before he went to declare the bankruptcy. Personal bankruptcy in CZE = 5 years of deductions from wages, must pay at least 30% of the amount owed. In his case, he's going to pay about 40% from that £120k debt. You can not declare personal bankruptcy on gambling debts, but then if you don't tell the judge, you're fine.
But, what's this system of his? I have got no idea.
Right now he says he has a limit of £50 per month for sporting bets, so he doesn't go mental. Prior to that he played online poker. The moral of all this? There isn't any. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

A friend of mine was telling me about his mate at Uni who used to play online poker, in the end he quit Uni. I asked him "Were his parents mad?" "They were until he bought them a car" turns out he ended up earning 100 and something k the first year and 250k the second.
It wasn't through winning big tournaments but rather through grinding away playing ~8 hands at once playing safe. He played for minimum 12 hours a day though, doesn't sound as glamorous as you'd think ____________________ Well, you know what they say.
