I have a new chain and set of sprockets to install on the bike.

The new chain has a link that can be riveted or a link with a circlip.

i do have a chain remover/riveter.

On the one hand i like the idea of being able to undo the circlip to remove and clean the chain.

On the other the riveted link would be far more secure.

i suppose removing and refitting the circlip will only lead to it failing.
And who am i kidding about cleaning anything.

The clip is only supposed to be used on engines of 500ccm and lower displacement. Anything above 500ccm (50Nm give or take) you are asking for trouble.

I'd use a rivet in anything over 250cc personally.

My latest chain (swift chain) on my CBF500 is a split link, decided to use the split link, never had issues with split links before on my smaller bikes.

All my chains are fitted by a mechanic, my current mechanic I've known for over 20 years so I trust his judgement.

Why would you clean it? Never cleaned mine in 17k miles.

However I do keep a spare split link under seat, seemed like a good idea. Least likely part to ever fail.

my rule of thumb:

Shoes = puncture repair glue
Pushbike = HQ-paperclip
Ped/scoot/belt = duct tape
125/250/etc cc = split-link
500+ = rivet
shaft = you're doing it wrong, turn back now.

but i suppose it depends on the chain/kit, as some of those split-link circlips look a bit "Chineseium" to begin with Sick

Fit two circlip links on opposite sides of the chain to double the strength.

Since you didn't say what bike, and you won't actually remove the chain to clean it, and even if you did it takes 5 minutes to grind, split and re-rivet a new link, then fit the rivet link and buy a spare, which you'll never use.

Never slid off on your own chain oil either?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
