Hey Guys

I've got a 75 xs500. Its leaking oil from the head on the left side and stutters at around 6k. I'm gonna replace the gasket to sort the oil leak and take a look at the valves for that stutter. The manual says the cam chain has to be split to remove the head and that a "special yamaha service tool" should be used ,it also shows some sort of homemade G clamp set up as an alternative.

Q1 - Is there a good of the shelf alternative i can buy to remove the cam chain master link ?

Q2 - Do i need to replace the masterlink with a new one when i re join it ? (the link cost £40 btw)

Any help greatly Appreciated
cheers

Yes. Position the new link on top of the cam sprocket and support it from the back with something like a lumphammer etc. You can then use a broad centre punch to peen the ends of the pins over (IIRC, they should already have punch marks on the ends of the pins) when you have put the outer plate of the link on - but don't go mad, you're only holding the side plate in place, not seizing the new link solid.

On the down side these XS500 Yams were noted for carrying their oil on the outside, lotta leaky problems.

yea, the gasket i bought says -
"This gasket was the final design Yamaha came out with to both seal the oil leaks and stop the heads cracking from overheating. It supercedes all other versions. The purpose of the metal piece is to wick away the heat from the hottest front part of the thin cylinder head."

i have hope.
