This is not your current ride necessarily, nor is it the most expensive. The full licence bike must be:
quick, good at handling, reliable, long distance ok, capable of a non embarrassing track day, not too bad on poor roads, light(ish), suitable for some touring, good on street cred, pillion possible, of average seat height, home serviceable, parts friendly......to name but a few criteria! Impossible I hear you say....well yes so how close can we get? Extremes and middle of the road bikes may well fail here. I would suggest sticking to post 2010 but new could well be a contender. If one bike is suggested a couple or more times , it could well be the one. I'd suggest a Street Triple but I rode one and found it a bit boring, a Fireblade but it's too focussed and any number of adventure bikes that are overly practical. But that's my view. Anyone come up with a good un? I am quite prepared to bow to consensus!

Here's one for starters: Z1000SX Wink

Depends how far into it but I'd put the k100 up depending. . . .

quick; Top speed 137mph but you can get more with tuning.

good at handling; You can chuck it around corners easily and have fun after fitting a brace or later k.

reliable; there is one that has done 885,978 kilometers about 550k miles. Alex Loeff.

long distance ok; there is a guy that has ridden from thailand to ireland and another I know of that is travelling the world on one.

capable of a non embarrassing track day; Depends what you are up against. Below is an example of bsk's modified racing bike.

https://www.bskspeedworks.co.uk/img/pictures/k100_mountain_2012.jpg

not too bad on poor roads; Look at last years bbq I went around the motocross track on mine. That was after going straight over the top of it Wink

light(ish); About 243kg wet so not that light.

suitable for some touring; easily modified or standard.

good on street cred; the cafe racers are doing pretty welll at the moment the market is booming.

pillion possible; Standard apart from the police unit is all pillion possible. Even then the tail can be removed and standard fitting or modified.

of average seat height; Average joe right here can sit on it.

home serviceable; Changed the clutch, rear mail oil seal, general service. Only problem is it's fuel injected but if you are handy that is no problem.

parts friendly; if you go down the modified route then there are plenty of parts, go standard some are getting rare. Some rocking horse. Motorworks, james sherlock, moto bins, ebay or facebook can all help.

If not the 100 the k75 isn't that bad and 20kg lighter as standard. Go for custom parts and you can drop another 10-15kg off that. Leaving you at about 200kg bike.

So, a sport tourer then. You'd be looking for what has widely been regarded as the 'greatest' all rounder since Jesus was in short pants?

Not the greatest bike ever, but utterly reliable bomb proof engine, handles well, good range and economy, capable of surprising you in the twisties, can give a pure sport a good run for its money...

Hmmm...

ZX6R G Very Happy A proper sports road bike before they went miniature and too track-biased. I've had one for 16 years and it ticks all the aforementioned boxes.

For me Id say its a toss up between FZS600/FZ1/Tracer 900 (theres a theme developing here, Im not biased at all! Laughing )

OPs criteria:

Quick? All of them
Good handling? All of them
Reliable? All of them
Long distance ok? All of them
Track day? Never done one so I dont know what you mean by "non-embarassing" but theres plenty of youtube vids of all 3 of them hooning around trackdays
Poor roads? All of them, though the tracer makes better work of London's constant moon crater potholes and speedbumps
Light? All of them
Suitable for touring? All of them
Street cred? FZ1 probably winner here
Pillion? All of them
Average seat height? All of them
Home serviceable? Not too sure about the Tracer, as its full of electronic wizardry
Parts friendly? FZS600/FZ1 win here due to being old, reliable and everyone and their mum has spares for them. Tracer is probably new enough to be stuck buying parts from a dealer. But also new enough to not need parts buying yet.

Theyre all nimble, agile, great for commuting and filtering, and most importabtly tonnes of fun! Compared to the Bandit1200 I had which was a good all rounder but never felt "special" and absolutely weighed as much as a small frigate with a similar turning circle & filtering.

As an FZ1 owner, IMO if you wanted to tour on it, you would definitely have to upgrade the seat, it gets quite uncomfortable after a couple of hours!

Of the bikes I've owned, best all rounder would be CBR600F!

Define "quick", "long distance" and "good on street cred"...

Street Triple R. Probably biased. But...

...it's quick (ideal road bike power IMO), handles spectacularly well, stops on a dime, looks great (Inb4 headlights), sounds brilliant, handles intermediate track days very well (I don't doubt a better rider could more than hold their own in advanced), tours all over Europe and is all-day comfortable two-upping all over Scotland with my 6'2" frame plus lady friend on the back.

It's also affordable, reasonable dollah to service and 18,000 miles later has never missed a beat.

Good point. I suppose it's how we see those things. If I think it's slow then it's slow.

Interesting choices so far. I forgot to mention 'looks'. That was stupid of me as it is something most bikers care about - mind you beauty is in the eye.......etc. The Tracer ticks boxes, I can see that but like most ad. bikes, it's not particular eye candy but again that is subjective. I find the Triple a bit underwhelming although the R might be worth a test ride. I like the idea of the CBR600F. Thou would be better for me though. The balance between useful and exciting seems to be central. Opening the garage door and being excited was well as ' that's the right bike for today's ride' are both important I suggest.

As said, it's very subjective, especially aesthetics.

But for power, touring, and some ability to get a hustle on - VFR1200.

I'd suggest you rode it with the wrong approach. It's flexibility can fool you into thinking it is just a good, day-to-day all-rounder. But forget that; put an obnoxiously loud can on it, and cane it through the twisty stuff, and you'll quickly find its true character, which is anything but boring.

But I think that's why it has to be high on the list. It's a real Jekyll-and-Hyde character, capable of many things.

I think if you found a Street Triple boring, you might as well give up now and buy an old Rover.

Completely agree. You were doing it wrong, OP. The STR will hustle with absolutely anything on a twisty road and sound fucking symphonic while at it.

I'm getting my hands on one tomorrow but MT10 must get a mention. I can't find a bad word about them anywhere.
But as a fun bike I'm pretty happy with my non triumph triple.

Glad you guys like your triples. I test rode a Street back to back with a Daytona which blew it away imo . I bought the Daytona on the spot! However, neither would get my nomination - a Speed Triple maybe. For a do everything, some fairing would be preferable to me. Nakeds are a bit more about fun.

What about the Italians......Tuono, Streetfighter maybe. Still think the Kwak SX takes some beating too!

A VFR750 before Honda fucked around too much with it. The single side swing arm version.

Yes, there are better handling bikes, yes there are faster bikes but the first do everything and built better than anything before or since.

A lovely bike.

Honda CB500s is excluded under the 2010 rule but ticks most of those boxes. Possibly lacking a little in street cred. ER6F is probably the closest modern bike.

That for me, plus fuel range and comfort, is why it doesn't top the list. Unfortunately, I don't have experience of other modern machinery to do the question justice. Aside from lack of funds, this is because I have a bike that is older than 2010 which does everything I want it to do, and I would certainly put high on the list if it fit the age criteria. On the Fazer forum, it is quite common for folks to come back to them after trying more modern fare, usually saying something like, "I should never have sold it!"

A short list may be more appropriate, choosing a single one is hard. If a friend asked me I'd probably say the following in this order:

Cbr600f - everything

Street triple - everything but wind protection here, but an awesome all round package

Zx9r - never ridden one, but I always think of it when I consider an all rounder, was a sports bike of its day, but seen as a sport tourer these days, I've sat on one and it's comfy, more than enough power, plus im a die hard kwak fan Smile

Vfr750 - never ridden one, but the consensus seems to be that it is one of the best bikes built and very versatile, if a little more on the touring side compared to the cbr

I'd say the zx9r is the upper end of engine size of consider, I certainly wouldn't want anything faster as an all rounder.

Does that mean if you have an old Rover, it'd be a good idea to take a test ride on a street triple? Wink

As for the OP's requirements I've got no idea, and am not interested as I only like silly bikes that are like an overgrown kid riding a tiny kids bike. Laughing
