Hi guys, thanks for your advice. So in the end I got a really good deal on a Kawasaki Z800 2016 with 2000 miles and warranty till November and I went with that. This thing is a beast, you can see it below.

Rode it yesterday for around 60 miles, I couldn't believe it but the weight is not an issue. You don't feel the weight at all when riding. It's pretty similar to the Honda I did my training on despite being ~20 kg heavier.

So if looks are important to you, that can has to go! Replacing it would probably reduce the weight by the equivalent of an average-sized, ocean-going oil tanker too.
Other than that, nice Smile

For such a high value bike I think you might want to lock it up better.

Try putting the chain through where -- in the second picture -- the valve cap is to give the chain some leverage so it's not just entirely rested on the floor and easy to attack. Try locking it so the padlock is in the middle of the chain resting in the air, not on the floor, too.

Could do with a padlock on the rear brake disc with time to make it more inconvenient to take. I don't see one on the front, either <oops.jpg>.

Looks to be the pavement on the other side of that wall so you're going to be in the eye of anyone and everyone locking it away all the time.

What size chain links are those? Doesn't look thick in the photo.

edit: actually put the chain through the wheel and over it, on both sides, not just round a cast like you have at the moment. In theory you cut just cut one of them and take the bike. I've no idea of the reality on the implications in handling that would have but I doubt a thief would care. Putting it around the tyre would create that effect of needing to cut chain or remove wheel that looping it through the rear goes for.

That was from when I picked it up, so it's not where I keep it. I have a alarmed disc lock for the front wheel, a normal one for the rear wheel and a chain for the rear wheel too. But thanks for the advice!

Not sure I understand what you mean by that?

So in the bottom picture the chain is just looped around part of the wheel rather than through it. My preference is with putting the chain through one of the gaps and then over the tyre (typically the top) so it can then be looped through the underside grab handle. Here, though, you don't have one hence my recommendation to move the chain up a little making it harder to attack because its not on the floor because you've introduced some tension by moving it further away from the object you're securing it to.

I know now, however, that it's not your setup so it's all good. I'd just loop the chain around the wheel to take up excess if ever there is any.

Not sure how you inferred that? I checked them, I was just wondering if there's any specific way to bring it down that I wasn't aware of.

Buying a bike with the knowledge that your cheapest quote is, IIRC (without looking at other thread), £800-900 is suicidal.

Insurance would have cost me at least that regardless of the bike, given that I'm young and only had my licence for a very short time. Quote on a 2014 MT07 was £1300, so should I buy a moped instead?

If that comes in at only a few hundred then for a year, probably.
