Is it wrong to put a screen on a street bike?

I've been thinking about getting a street bike but I want to stick a screen on it for the occasional motorway journey.

Is this sacrilegious? Will I get called all sorts of name and have things thrown at me? Should I just man up and stick to the spirit of a street bike?

Depends on the screen really, if you're talking some hideous monstrosity more suited to a C90 with a fishing tackle box on the back then...maybe not. If it's just a ikkle one, meh.

Otherwise, ultimately no one gives a fuck.

There are two types of screen. Those which deflect the weather and those that improve your aerodynamics. Pick a fly screen if you want to look cool. To keep dry, you might have to not mind the leg pulling! Tall screens are not always the best to reduce buffeting. Try before you buy if at all possible. A good helmet can be a better investment!

Results can be unpredictable, you might find your head gets more buffeting, which is worse than the smoother flow with a small screen or none.

IMO it ain't wrong to put a screen on a naked, but it will always tightrope a line with adding tat and de-suiting a bike for an intended purpose or character feel, and even look/image. The last one is the least important as caring what people think is pretty spastic logic.

I come from a school that says a naked bike should be simple, and have as little added features, equipment and practically as possible. To an extent a given naked bike needs to be lighter and more agile than its direct faired equivalent as far as possible.

In the same logic a Yamaha MT10 needs to be or should be lighter, shorter, and lower geared than an R1.

An XJR 1300 does not need to be, but should be lighter and more nimble than an FJ1200 or similar.

Naked bike for looks or a style is not a good enough reason to go naked and is just blurring lines. De-tuning a naked version sports bike to make it just less techy and less flagship than the most expensive SP version is also not acceptable in my world either.

The two bikes would have to be so specialist at different things that you couldn't realistically do everything even moderately well on either. Compromises are a shit way to live a life and get everything you don't want.

As an extreme I'd expect a supermoto done properly to be much slower and less comfortable than a sports bike using the same size motor, and I'd expect it to be so hard sprung that off road it would be hopeless.

The more bikes for different jobs is the only ideal, and all rounding excellence is just a list of poor choices and not getting anything you want.

I had a small Puig screen on my Hornet. I initially took it off because ti looked better, but when I was riding at speed it made quite a bit of difference and didn't look that bad.

slightly hijacking this topic - my mate has a naked Triumph 995 (or is it 955?) and hes looking at getting a screen for it...

ive told him to try a sports bike but he says he's too big.. (hes about 6'3" and maybe 14/15 stone).. any suggestions?

I have a screen on my honda grom and its ugly and i dont give a damn.
I cut 1/3 of the screen off with a solidering iron (used a saw on another screen and the whole screen shattered) lol as when the screen was normal size the wind buffeting on my head was to much and noise was too loud and now its perfect but looks terrible
Gives the right amount of wind protection i need now

A quite small screen can make a huge difference to motorway plus speeds, it doesn't need to be a massive barn door screen.

My screen is huge and ugly. But thanks to that, no wind / no bugs attack.

Aprilia RSV Mille, or less sporty but bigger physically a Kawasaki ZX12. Things like Thunderaces, ZX9R's, and TLR1000's are all big roomy bikes, but have lower seat heights so may not feel as comfortable.

A mint example of any of the above is still a fucking awesome value machine IMO.
