Hi everyone,

I got an odd issue with Yamaha XVS 250, it starts and idles just fine but when you twist the throttle it starts to bog and dies. NOW you would think that the pilot jet is clogged as idle is fine and main jet is ok too BUT it's the fact that after few attempts to rev the bike it goes to normal and will rev without any problem at all.

So on the first start it will bog/die until you twist the throttle very carefully for a bit. After that it rides without any issues at all.

I assume if pilot jet was clocked it would always have this issue and would not fix itself after a bit of attempted throttle twisting?

You could have unwanted air going in where it should not, (weaker mixture).
Does the accelerator pump work in the carb?

If the spark plug is showing a weak mixture just try a denser air filter (worn carb),
I take it that the carb diaphragm rubber & slide is ok and working.

INSUFFICIENT FUEL FOR MEANINGFUL ACCELERATION.

You've got a tap with ON, PRI and RES, right?

ON is vacuum operated, PRIme is free flowing, RES is reserve.

Try setting it to PRI, see if the problem goes away. If it does then sort the problem with the vacuum line or the vacuum tap itself, or just set it to PRI before starting, and remember to set it to ON (by which I mean off) when you turn it off.

Does this bike have manual choke?
What you describe sounds like putting choke in too early, or rather choke not working properly - if it runs normally once warmed up.

Thanks for the replies guys.

@jaffa90 I will inspect the spark plugs later on today after work.

@Rogerborg Yes it does have a tap with ON, PRI and RES, I will try to see if PRI works better.

@doggone because the bike is loud I use choke to start the bike and turn off the choke right away.

Do you live in a warm climate to do this?

Well i don`t think you have a bike problem, have you tried setting off with choke on / or half choke and shut it off after 2miles?

Feel like a right pleb, but after having a choke on for a minute bike seems to rev just fine. I will test again tomorrow morning.

Heh, there you go. I agree with turning the choke off as soon as possible, but that doesn't mean right away.

It also suggest that your idle mixture may be set a bit rich, if it's idling smoothly while cold without any choke. You want to adjust it once the engine is hot.
