What would you buy with £3-4k? - non sports bike, ideally upright(ish) riding position, used weekends for fun B road rides.

(No STR allowed as been there).

Give me ideas chaps I'm struggling.....

Just slightly over 4k will get you MT09. And will definitely get you MT07.

Why wouldn't you double dip?

I mean, what do you want that's different from a Street Triple?

B roads? £3-4K? Upright? Fun?

Supermoto.

There's plenty out there, go test-ride some. You're under for decently looked after KX/CR500 stuff, as untouched bikes are about your budget, but more modern, lower maintenance, much easier to ride 4 strokes, are about there.

I loved the STR but after half an hour my legs felt cramped and my frame never felt comfortable on it - I'm 6ft 3 with a lot of the height in my legs.

Ideally I'd like something similar but that fits me.

+1 - and my current ride too, yada yada, but I would have thought it was spot on for your requirements

I'm not especially tall but have a dodgy knee that hates being cramped for long periods of time. I've ridden both
the STR and MT09. The 09 is your bike at 6 foot 3, especially the Sport Tracker variant as it has a higher seat than
the more common base model. It's also far more of a brute than a Striple, that's the main reason I bought the Yamaha
over the Triumph. Money wasn't an issue really, although I got brand new Yamaha for the same as I'd allocated for used
Triumph, so 3 years MOT free then. Take a demonstrator out for a test ride somewhere and you'll see what I mean.
Can't comment on the latest variant of MT09 as I haven't ridden one yet. Basically the same with slightly better
suspension, a LED headlight and a quick (up) shifter. Oh and I saw a KTM 90 being recovered on the back
of an entirely oversized truck last night. I guess another KTM stopped working for no reason Thinking It hadn't been crashed.

I bought a Ducati Monster S2r for the lower end of your budget

Non sports? tick
Upright(ish) tick
Fun B roads? tick

But they might be a bit small.

You might find a Hypermotard for the top end if you're lucky and they're a bit bigger.

Early Tuono? The V twin one..?

Guy at work has had a KTM 690 since it was about a year old, think it's 5 years old now. He loves it, but says it's spent countless hours in Fowler's workshop having warranty work done on it for various reasons.

Main issues he has had have been throttle related, saying that he says he'd buy another KTM. So the pleasure of riding it must outweigh it's unreliability...

That's funny, the guy from Fowlers who collected my bike in their van for a bit of work last year said he picks up
more dead KTMs than any other marque. Laughing

Gsr 750/ hornet 600/ fz800/ z800 can all do the job in your price range and can provide long enough legs for a tour. F800r would be my compromise between mental single (with no all day comfort) and the lack of grunt a single gives. F800gs variants for less rushed approach or when triumph 800. If you want to just hoon, any 450 enduro with custom rims and slicks will more than suffice. I had wr125sm wheels on a wr426 ...wow....just wow.

I'd recommend an Enfield as well, or, even one of the Mash 400 range. My Mash is very reminiscent of riding my old Enfield Bullet 350, but, it has a little more oomph, and has been very reliable over the approaching 3 years of ownership.

If it was me, I'd get something different to anything I'd had before. Especially if it's for fun. I quite like the look of some of the moto guzzis.
And in any case, a bike around that price mark should hold it's value for a season or 2 if looked after then you can try something else.

Be warned.. I did end up with a virago once..

A contender for "the best bike that nobody buys". Under 1000 sold in 8 years, but might be worth a look if you can find one.

It rides like an mt09 without any of the craziness but all of the fun if you crack it open. Bmw don't really sell it enough as a 'fun bike....it's not in keeping with hipster/ewgregor/boringman cool.

Then it doesn't ride like an MT09. The crazy is what made me buy one. Having also ridden it's more powerful brother the
MT10 i can safely say that while it's undoubtedly faster and more powerful, it's also considerably more civilised than it's
unruly punk rocker younger brother. Unlike the R1 derived MT10, the MT09 was built from the ground up to be a beast
of a thing, I think even Yamaha thought the original MT09 was too much as with every 'variant' since they've attempted to
make it more user friendly. Mine is one of the last without TC for instance. All I have are the throttle modes and ABS.
The latest ones have quickshifter, more compliant suspension, TC, and altered mapping to calm them down a bit.
I've not tried one of the latest 09's, I can't really see the point, the quickshifter would be fun I suppose but ultimately
they are slowly but surely making it safer™ because nanny state.
