I read somewhere, I think it was an Electric Car forum a few days ago that energy companies are actively looking to charge higher tariffs on peak days bearing in mind the winter draw in evenings and things like washing machine, shower, tumble dryer, plug in car all being on late at night and forcing the grid to generate electric from fossils because solar doesn't work at night unless everyone who has evening power draw and daytime surplus has battery walls fitted.

BUMP:

Gumbint says: 'Smart' meters don't help customers, are expensive, don't work, and therefore roll-out of them must be accelerated.

I've got a roll for you. Rolling Eyes

Smart meters are supposed to play a major part in the UK's clean vehicle revolution by allowing electric cars to charge overnight when wind power is strong, demand is low, and energy is cheap.

Because it's always windier at night?

Charging eco-trinkets is the least bad use for any bird-mincers that are very temporarily generating a brief burst of net energy.

It's very sad to hear that a 'smart' meter is required to charge them up though, rather than just plugging them into a regular dumb socket, since I will never, ever have one. Sad

What's a smart meter got over basic products like these apart from being
unable to be used with wired in cookers?

If you want to monitor your total household power, you can also get a unit that clips over the incoming live wire and will give you the total power used for the whole house, cookers an' all.

Unless you've bypassed the meter....

Shocked
