I have an mp3 file that I need to edit but haven't got a clue about what software to use so was hoping that some of you resourceful bunch could recommend something.

The file isn't the best quality so would need something to cut down on the white noise while increasing a couple of quiet voices in the background but not the main speaker.... if that makes sense.

Single track?

Think Audacity maybe able to do this but haven't used it in years.

PM me and I'll clean it up, or use what the fine fellow above has recommended.

The white noise you mention is most likely hiss and you can reduce it by adding something called a Low Pass Filter (like a treble control) then finding the area of frequencies you want to cut away. Then use a High Pass Filter to remove some of the low end rumble at the other end of the frequency spectrum.

As for lifting the volume of quiet sections the better approach would be to select the specific parts in the file and raise them, or use something called a compressor which with the right settings will make the source material appear to be louder (noticeable on telly and radio when the adverts start).

Other minor things would be remove dc offset and possibly add a limiter.

The above tools come with Audacity.

Welcome to world of audiophiles...possible the worst of all the philes.
