I'm sure there is a thread for this.
TLDR look.

These things collect a lot of info.

Some of it on line.

How 'secure' is the info?

I only have Broadband tv and phone with heating on an Internet control.

Insulating tape over my laptop webcam and mic is disabled. Won't be buying any of these fangled home listening devices.
I've managed 45 years without, I think I will cope.

By design they've got to be listening to and processing everything you say in order to pick out the trigger words

The devices themselves are pretty dumb everything after the wake word is send to The NSA google/amazon etc for recording and processing.

So don't be murdering folk in its presence -

That is quite interesting, yet I can't see this working in our (CZE) law system as several times before, in many cases, police had audio/video recordings, email transcriptions etc., which they were not allowed to use in front of the court of law due to them being obtained illegally.

So a device as described in the article sure wouldn't mean much either.

Why would home automation need to listen in when they already know more about you than you do?
If nobody here uses any of Google, Facebook, Bing etc. etc. etc. (lots of etcs) then I'll be a monkey's uncle.

Illegal surveillance recordings would be inadmissable as evidence uk law too.

However the recordings from a voice assistant wouldn't be illegally obtained, you've give amazon or whoever permission to record you, by virtue of the fact you've agreed to their T&Cs

The only question is whether amazon or google should comply with a warrant demanding they hand them over.

What's "UK" law?

I'd be surprised, since it's codified nowhere except PACE 78, but my understanding is that this is generally taken to refer to the relevance of the evidence to the charges, rather than the method of obtaining it.

Perhaps you know differently. Can you point at three criminal cases in... "UK" law... which have been dismissed specifically due to an unclean hands defence?

I meant English law.

However it does appear as though you are correct and I am miss informed, evidence however it would not automatically be inadmissable if it were obtained illegally.

Septic cop / court shows have a lot to answer for. They've got a rager on for shouting "inadmissible!", but over here we seem to treat evidence as evidence, and naughtiness in obtaining it as a separate issue.

Tampering and entrapment are where we draw the line, and even that's drawn with one of Theresa May's red pens.
