You want hex sockets ( six sided) on those things.
In fact anything alloy as they round off for a pastime.

Adjustable spaniards ? Nooooooooooo!
keep them for plumbing and impromptu hammers.

I didn't use the adjustable spanners. Folded arms
I have ordered a six sided socket.
I am waiting for its arrival before I proceed. Thumbs Up

Pretty sure the one ony CG is only 17mm. Must be a few different ones. I killed the first one on mine too, it was properly seized. As above - 6 sided socket is the way.

If you need to borrow any tools, I am only round the corner and have most things.

AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!
This bloody bike! Missed the delivery of the socket last Friday because I was out having my van MOT'd.
Had to wait over the long weekend for redelivery because bank holiday. Drivers just turned up with a split open padded
envelope with an invoice and a little ziplock bag in it. Socket whereabouts unknown. Could be on the floor in his
(packed) van, could be at the depot. Just ordered a set on sockets from elsewhere which may be here by the 4th.
How can a bleeding oil change take so much effort. FFS! Brick Wall

Update - MOT monday, lets see how she does.

Changed brake shoes on Thursday, cleaned drum out with brake cleaner and lubed up the cam mechanism. Pedal
working properly now, brake no longer binding. Thumbs Up

I only had copperslip available but tbh the bike would really benefit from a new chain and sprocket kit soon. I'll make sure
I use grease next time it's in bits. I'd have to go buy some first. Embarassed

Changed oil today, was unsurprised to see that it was in pretty poor
condition, and about half the quantity that should have been in there.

That's what I'd expect oil from a diesel engine to look like. Filthy.

It should have come to the line if it had enough oil in there. All that's left for me to do assuming a pass on Monday is
to fit a new front L plate on the fork leg and I can get rid of this from my back yard. Next and hopefully final update on Monday.

The 24mm ring spanner slipped off the nut through lack of space causing that shiny bit, as you tried to turn it the frame
sort of guided it off the nut again. A 1/2 inch drive 24mm hex socket. should be safer for the nut.
That looks exactly the same as the tappet cover on my Africa Twin. The front cylinder one has a bit of frame stopping a socket getting in easily. I found the Honda tool kit rear wheel spanner worked a treat and was a very good fit.

The 6 sided socket I bought worked great, it was done up really very tightly indeed so it was a wise purchase.

It's nice to know that I called worn shoes for the sticking brake.

I do believe that's a clean sheet. Cool Time for him to have it back. I'l drop it over this evening.

Big thanks of course to Nobby Thumbs Up Wink and everybody else who took the time to respond, even you Tef. Laughing

Let's hope he can keep it the right way up now. I've kind of enjoyed tinkering with it too if I'm honest.

This is a crap load like when people get into repairing push bikes, someone always finds a 30 year old steel bike frame and wants to sand it, paint and and rebuild it to a unique steed.

Yeah, the money, time and frustration is annoying but the mistakes and learning curve is great and that's why its always nice to done at least once. You will learn a lot from doing it the points tef made are valid but what else would you be doing in your spare time?

** EDIT**

Just saw your last post, looks like it all went well, so I ask, are you happy with what you have learnt and what have you learnt? I mean it post all the things you have learnt from doing this to inspire others.
