good morning from a sunnyish England. currently working on a couple projects. I have a question. not only by law (because we all know many shops lets stuff slide, but would I get an mot without indicators or speedo? also in terms of reflectors on the licence plate is it necessary?

thanks in advance.

for clarity, the only lights I'm running are headlight and stop/tail light above the licence plate to also count as licence plate illuminator. I see a fair amount of bikes without indicators or speedo so I assumed its ok but wanted a second opinion. thanks very much

Speedo isn't checked other than for current mileage. It's a construction and use item though IIRC.

There's no legal requirement for indicators to be fitted.

I believe indicators are required 1986 onwards but were optional before if memory serves.

Well you learn something new every day. Laughing Thumbs Up

Direction indicators aren’t needed for motorcycles that:

don’t have front and rear position lamps
have front and rear position lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked
can’t exceed 30mph / 50kph
was first used before 1 August 1986
are ‘off road’ motorcycles designed to carry only the rider
are ‘off road’ motorcycle combinations designed to carry the rider and one passenger in the side car

Pretty simple this bit.

My KDX 125 passed with no indicators and a speedo clearly smashed to bits. In fact the tester wasn't going to test it at first because of the missing indicators so I told I believed off-road bikes didn't need them; to his credit he checked the manual, agreed with me and eventually passed it.

I believe the reflector is a must-have though.

A stick on reflector costs about 99p so there's no excuses for not having one. Razz

Not having indicators is a funny one. With some testers it'll just be an advisory, with some testers everything will be cool as long as there aren't controls for indicators that you don't have, with some testers you'll get a daylight only MOT and with some testers they'll just fail the bike. And do you know what the legal consequences are of having a "daytime MOT"?

Here they are, in full:

Also off road bikes (well... Most enduro types) aren't required to have them. I can't recall having any on the KTM or the TTR. I think it only counted for solo ones though...pillion brings problems to that party.
