Have come to the conclusion that a single motorbike just may not be enough, so am looking into the pros and cons of getting another one. First problem is creating a second bike-size hole in my storage unit garage; but I wouldn't mind a bit of a steer on the whole insurance thing.

Are there particular companies who specialise in this that I should be approaching as a no-brainer? How much less than the cost of two completely separate policies should I expect to end up paying?

I assume that in terms of the fire and theft side, the insurer's risk is the same for both bikes so I shouldn't expect any discount on that; but that it should be different in terms of accident cover as I can only ever ride one bike at once?

No doubt my current NCD will only count for one machine (ie the more expensive new one). FWIW I'm about 7 months in to my second year with Hastings (ie, I currently have just 1 year NCD).

Any thoughts much appreciated.

When I had multiple bikes the best policy ever was the Norwich Union rider policy. You just stipulated the max cc and rode any bike up to that. sadly long gone. Crying or Very sad

Then I had Carol Nash multibike. Basically you insured the highest cost bike and any other was a nominal £25 per bike. However one year the cost went up astronomically so that was a no no.

Then I went with MCE Shocked . I insured 3 bikes on a multibike policy and it was pretty good except if you tried to change bikes part way through it cost you a small fortune plus I can't remember what the NCD system was.

Don't bother with comparison sites for multibike though, just pick up the phone.

One thing to note, and I don't know if its relevant to bikes nowadays, but I found it cheaper insuring 3 cars as separates with direct line than the same cars on a multi car with Admiral, £680 FC as opposed to £900ish.

Ha - I'd forgotten about that - I had one of those about 35 years ago! Odd - it still must have been the best value policy available (or I wouldn't have bought it); even though I only ever rode the one bike.

So who does everyone else use?

Guessing that the best solution in the first instance would be just to add any new bike on to my existing policy (assuming it's possible); and then shop around after I've passed 'Go' and collected my 2nd year's NCD?

I had the original NU rider policy till they stopped taking on new riders, I still have that same policy (now aviva) so if I stop it I lose it for life.

Anyway, Carole Nash would be the first phone call to make for multi bikes for regular use. As they have been my Broker since the AA bugged out on motorcycles yonks ago CN would be first on my list.

I have two with Carol Nash, you might be pleasantly surprised how little extra they ask, however my second one is only a 250 trailie.

Phone around is the best bet as mentioned. Going a few years back but when I had 2 bikes it worked out cheaper that they were insured separately so don't rule that out either.

When going for two bikes remember everything doubles. So tax, MOT, servicing all goes up.
