I got a call from a friend this morning, said he got on bike to go to work and it stopped with a clunk. I caught up with him at the dealership nearby, where there was some beard scratching and teeth sucking going on as the starter motor went whizz and nothing else happened and the mechanic was delicately trying to explain it was either a failed starter part he needed to find an ajs dealer for or something really bad. So we took it back to his and I got some spanners out.

It would appear AJS crankshafts are made of cheese. Seriously, how the fuck do you break a crankshaft in two?

No jewelery in the oil that I dropped. I suspect paying someone to fix would cost more than the bike is worth.

Toying with the idea of taking engine back to mine and dismantling it on the old kitchen table that's mostly a guitar building workbench. Is it worth even toying with the idea of salvaging anything or will whatever's happened to fuck the crankshaft have fucked everything?

This is a Chinese AJS I presume?

If so, bin it.

I’d give it a go. Nothing to lose and it’s not something that you get to take apart very often.

In my, admittedly limited, experience I would say that it is due to every single part on a Chinko bike is made from inferior materials..
