My father in law is thinking of getting a bike. The only problem is the last time he rode seriously the sifter was on the right and the brake on the left.

Anyone still make bikes this way?

No. You don't have to have a man run along in front of your horseless carriage waving a red flag these days either.

Fairly sure that Royal Enfield tractors, sorry, bikes, with a separate gearbox as opposed to integrated into the crankcase on every other bike bar Harley's tractors, has the shift on the opposite side.

So get something "classic" with the gear lever on the right.

Something to do with less effort for use of most of the gearbox?

You can step on the Lever faster than you can lift it making upshifts quicker improving acceleration.

So you can change up (press down) when cranked over. You sometimes can't get your foot under the lever. Happened to me a couple of times on the road when tackling a high-speed sweeper.

Yes, older 4-speed bullets have a RHS gear shift and the 5-speed ones with the seperate gearbox can be converted to RHS gearshift.

However, he'll very quickly get used to a LHS gearshift. I have bikes with both and it is very rare that I get mixed up.

There are also bikes with no shifter at all these days. Honda do a few with auto boxes.

Not since 2007ish, but if he's set on it, that's the newest bike you'd find with a traditional gear arrangement. Realistically, if he's that out of touch, then it won't be that hard to transition - I could swap between the two no problem when I had left and right change bikes at the same time.

I don't think he wants anything too old (i.e. hassle) so I'll just say "no."

I suggested borrowing my 125 for a bit rather than just jump in and get a litre bike or something stupid Smile At least he could get used to the shifter being on the "wrong" side on an easy-going bike.

A twist and go moped is probably faster than the bikes he rode in his youth...

In that case it's not a bicycle, it's a motorbike and should be licenced, taxed and insured accordingly.

Plus, also I am sure there must still be some "old school" chopper type guys doing suicide clutch set ups.

As of last weekend I have working tail and brake lights now. Just looking into the smallest headlamp that will get through the MSVA and then I'm done. I can speed restrict it down to 28mph and call it a moped and then I don't need to bother with indicators Smile

Not sure, I know they were putting those dicking about clutches on Panheads back in the 50s, but not sure what side it was on.

I think the Indians had it on the right, too, at some point...?

Does it have a reg plate? It'll need one of them as well.

How would an insurance company feel about a home made e-bike?
I know you can get leccy scooters made by Yamaha etc but home made? Would they insure it?
(genuine question - was going to make a leccy bike before lithium power was around!)

I think he's getting too hung up on which side the gearshift is.

Anything with a native right hand shift will also have a kick start and cost a small mortgage. Does he really want to be kick-starting half a ton of pig-iron? Could he even if he wanted to?

No... it's one of those "cake and eat" things. Tough titty is the accepted answer (thanx BTW.)

With regards to ebike insurance it's about the same difficulty level as building and insuring any custom motor vehicle i.e. Q-plate territory Sad

People have done it though... mainly for the craic than anything else. One step at a time Smile
