I'm guessing that a very thin smear of non-setting compound, if there's any hint of problem with the mating surfaces would be useful, or nothing if the faces are OK (or it's the cylinder head gasket!). Nothing on the belt drive cover (unless it's a little grease to assist subsequent disassembly).

Any advice?

Observation: The manufacturer uses a small spot of grey RTV on the crankcase gasket where joint meets the cylinder base gasket.

Additional sealing compounds are used to assist assembly by keeping the gasket in position. I would stick any gasket to the part that is easiest to get the gasket off again.
Normally it is either gasket or a sealant/paste and not both as the sealant can affect the properties of the gasket material.

If an old gasket is all that is available the. Using a compound is better than nothing.
Some gaskets can be eliminated by using certain compounds.
RTF silicone is popular but is not at all any sort of panacea.
Look for 3M or Loctite products if you need reliable performance.
And if using any compound all surfaces must be spotless. No oil or grease.

I always thought this too, however recently when rebuilding a Ducati monster engine it clearly states in the service manual to use sealant on the base and head gaskets
