So, when I went to start my bike (Honda cg125 es 06) two days ago the engine ran for a split second then conked out. Then it wouldn't start anymore and there was a single clicking sound each time I tried the ignition. The headlight and horn were normal so I think it must be a problem with the starter motor. I push started the bike and after that the bike would start completely fine throughout the day.

The exact same thing happened yesterday, once the bike was push started it would start on its own perfectly fine.

This morning I managed to start the bike first time no problem, but I'm not sure if the problem has gone away or not.

Anyone got any ideas on what the problem may be and how fixable it is?

"""I think it must be a problem with the starter motor.""""
Replace it or check the battery voltage at different stages.
A multimeter will tell all what`s going on.

I'm on the road abroad so I just wanted a second opinion before taking it apart. I don't want to try and find a replacement unless I have too

It sounds as if the battery's flattening overnight, or the starter motor drive gear is sticking.

Edit: Apols. Saw "the headlight is OK", so probably not duff battery.

If it's sticking would cleaning it fix it?

I can almost guarantee that the problem is worn out starter motor brushes, or less likely, sticking brushes. Next time the starter fails, do the following. Press the starter button, and listen for the click. keep the button pressed. Now press the horn button. If the horn works normally, the starter is not drawing heavy current as it would normally, so it will be brush problem, and not the starter clutch..Brushes are about £20. To replace them you need to remove the starter and strip it. You will need a small socket set, and ALSO CARE AND PATIENCE. Videos on youtube show you how.

Thanks this is really helpful, I'll try out this test next time it doesn't work and go from there
