Someone I know got one of those Indian phone calls from 'Microsoft' telling them their computer was infected, and they went along with it for a while Brick Wall As far as I can tell the only thing they did was put the laptop into airplane mode (the guy apparently said they were disabling their modem Confused), but I've disabled remote connection.

Malware bytes and Windows malicious software tool hasn't found anything but is there anything else I need to check for? It sounds like Indian chappy was trying to convince them they had a virus but they hung up before buying anything.

They tend to use stuff like logmein to gain access, in the hope they can get monies from you. Just look at the browser history, to see where they went and what they downloaded.

Might be worth looking in Control Panel/Programs, and checking for any installed exe`s,
If you check the Installed date tab at the top(guessing Win7 on wards) and it will list the most recent installed.

A friend's auntie had this recently. They installed logmein and went into her online banking tried to transfer 2 grand. The bank put a stop on it. I spent a long long time going through her laptop.

I've already cleared it Embarassed I had a look for any downloaded/installed programs and couldn't see anything. From what I could gather (they weren't exactly clear) they seemed to be saying they downloaded an exe, but also said the person on the phone got them to press Fn+R (I assume they meant windows + R) as cmd was the last thing run.

They were telling me how someone found a gold coin on the street in front of them, who then sold it to them for a fiver Laughing

I noticed on the chrome home screen it had Barclays and Paypal, when I don't think they use either. I'll ask when I drop the laptop back round.

Formating the laptop is the only solution.

The owner should be encouraged to change all their passwords.

Not sure if serious but I'm not doing all that Razz The laptop had some remote access stuff already setup from another unofficial tech support guy, I'm wondering if Mr Microsoft just used that. The other odd thing was she reckoned they knew her 'license ID', and showed me a 32 digit key they'd written down, although I couldn't work what it was meant to be.
