I have used ABBA stands for years, never had an issue until today.

I picked up a fitting kit for the Busa, wanting to adjust the rear shock I put it up on the ABBA stand. As I knelt down beside it the bike let out a crack then fell on to its side.

The culprit was this.

I just don't think it's up to holding up a 230kg + bike.

And the damage...

Minor but fucking annoying.

I'd say it's just one of those unfortunate things, mine has held my bike plus me sat on it without an issue and that's over 300kg.

That is not just unfortunate that's a fail.
Contact ABBA.

You're lucky the bike didn't fall.

It did. The marks are where the stand dug in when it landed.

More to the point you are lucky it never fell on you, imagine you were underneath on the ground working on the side stand or something, I’d be mentioning that to ABBA, they will also want that part back for testing, I'd send them a strongly worded email mentioning your shock and disappointment, and your lucky escape, with pictures, and see what they come back with.

They may have liability insurance to cover things such as this, if they don't they are stupid.

I have never before heard of one failing (doesn't mean it hasn't of course)

Tell Abba and as said, they will certainly ask for the bobbin back for checking.

Could it possibly have not been located properly?

I won't ask if you screwed the lug in correctly because from that tear it appears like it was fully seated.

First case I've heard of an ABBA failing....will be checking mine closely.

I'm trying to remember my busa and the Abba stand.

Does that not sit around the pivot nut but inside a frame recess?

Shame about the damage to a nice bike!
I see that's a cup/ socket design adapter on these stands, and I assume it locates on the swing arm bolt/nuts.

The NWS stand I had used two steel prongs that fitted into hollow bolt holes in the frame/Swingarm, and was more of a pain to locate or adjust for different bikes, but it seemed pretty secure once in place.

My bike fell off mine once but it was because I hadn't fitted the cups properly over the swing arm nuts. Caught it and it didn't fall but a lesson was learned. Is it possible that it wasn't fully pushed in? Could also just have been a flawnin that particular part.

A pin sits inside the cup, this then fits into the swing arm pivot.

Everything was fitted and seated correctly.

That’s sickening 🤮

If it was mint before I’d struggle living with a bike that had a scratched frame, it would trigger fuck out of me.

I just have trouble seeing how the cup could come off even with that damage if it was seated properly. If that had given way I would have thought it would have to fail completely, ie. a whole chunk out of it to allow the bike to drop.

Looking at that I would wonder if it happened as the bike fell but I'm sure we will never know unless Abba say it was metal failure.

You might as well contact them as you have nothing to lose. At the least I would expect you to get a free set of bobbins out of them.

The cup didnt come off, the spigot that sits inside it cracked the cup then seemed to be turned 90 degrees inside the cup.
I can 100% say everything was fitted perfectly, I'd had the TL up on the stand moments before and had no problem.
The only difference was the fitting kit.
I've mesaged ABBA, I'm not gunning for compensation just wonder what their thoughts are on it.

Frame damage, non-repairable write off. Whistle

I'm also interested in their response, and have invited them to comment. Pass the popcorn

I'm just wondering if the fitting kit was genuine/ right for the bike. Did you get it direct from ABBA?

Actually, looking at the photo. That does look incredibly roughly machined compared to my Abba bobbins but that could be the photograph.

I'd certainly be interested to hears Abba's response because their whole sales patter is based on how safe their stands ar compared with paddock stands and they have to justify their prices because of that.

The part you can see came with the stand I bought from Abba. The spigot adapter kit came new from eBay but was genuine ABBA and was correct for the busa.

IMHO that looks like operator error. If the spindle insert rolled in the cup it's either now bent or it was never plugged in the hollow bolt properly in the first place.

The cup looks too thin walled for the job of holding up a bike. I do not like this design... Easy enough to make up one piece m20? threaded pins.

You should be a marine engineer. 4mm? looks a bit thin, play safe and use 6mm even though it's 20x stronger than you need Wink

That's how we work.

Looks to me to be a fitting intended for a smaller nut and then brutalised to fit a larger one resulting in failure hence the splits in the metal.
