Anyone around Birmingham have a lathe and can trim some of the material off the bar ends to fit?

that could work actually. Just needs at most 1 mm off the circumference of the fittings as well as the bar end sleeve.

Will give that a try, cheers mate.

I am, and I do. Give me a shout if the hacksaw/file method doesn't work out.

Mount the bar end in a drill and run it over a file in a vice - better chance of keeping it round.

A belt sander is also useful. Rotate the piece in the opposite direction to belt travel as you lightly press it on. Be careful.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and for the offer trimming them!

I managed to do one side last night before putting the kids to bed, using a grinding wheel on the angle grinder. I don't have a vice or a worktable, so I managed by using g clamps to the bench and grind them down that way.
