Hi everyone,

First time on a forum as I can't find an answer anywhere online so please forgive any errors.

My 2003 Honda cbr600rr starts perfectly on the button when cold, however when I have been riding and the bike is warmed up and I stop for petrol for example, when I try to go again the battery is dead and wont restart the bike. Sometimes I am lucky and once I leave the bike for 5-10 mins it then will just about start, however last night I had to resort to bump starting it as it was completely dead.

I have been told it could be the alternator or regulator however I really want advice from someone with electrical knowledge to explain what is going on so I don't waste time or money replacing parts that might not be the issue. The bike has a new battery also as I initially thought it could be a battery problem.

Many thanks,
Rose

Have the valve clearances been checked?

Standing voltage of the battery

VS

Voltage readout of the engine running/lamps on.

Have you a multimeter or know of an electrician who can test all the charging system?

What you'll be looking for is:

Voltage of the battery cold (12 to 13.8v)
Voltage when started (hopefully being charged so >14V)
Voltage when the hot issue occurs

Also, you don't explicitly say but is it not turning over at all (not enough power for starter motor) or turning over but not starting? "Battery dead" says not turning over I guess but are the instrument lights still working? Do they "dip out" as you try and turn it over?

100% gonna be a Honda fried regulator.

Get bike running, check + and - with a multimeter. Anything over 14.8 is probably worrying, I'd be expecting 13.5-14v at 5k rpm with all those lights on as standard.

There's good reason for Honda charging systems to be suspect. Yours is towards the end of the era they were notorious for failing, but still in range. Do as paddy said, there's a very good chance that's the suspect. The issue then is has it taken out the Stator and battery if it's been happening for a while? Mine did, as the PO kept riding the thing and charging the battery up as needed.

If you get no DC voltage on the battery while the engine is running, don't forget to check for AC voltage between the three yellow wires coming out of the stator of your charging system, before you run and replace the rectifier/regulator unit. You should see anything between 30V and 60V while the engine is running. If you can't see any AC voltage between any of the wires, the stator is dead. If you can see some AC voltage between at least one combination of three wires, on of the widninds is dead and the rest is going to die soon enough.

Burned stators are not uncommon. Manytimes caused by dirty connections, that put more strain on the windings of the stator.

EDIT: I would guess the stators is located under the left hand side engine cover.

Yep, left hand side.
