Saw this ad in MCN for something called tankchip. Its apparently some metallic amalgam which when dropped into the fuel tank does some voodoo to your fuel and improves engine performance.

So any truth in its claims to work or the interesting claim it was used in Hurricane fighters deployed in WW2 by the Russians over the Eastern Front?

Cheers

Your link didn't work for me
this one does though

https://tankchip.com/

It may just be TEL which has been about since the 1920s and may not be very legal now due to the lead content

brief quote from wiki:
Aviation spirits with TEL used in WWII reached 150 octane to enable supercharged engines such as the Rolls-Royce Merlin and Griffon to reach high horsepower ratings at altitude

Further further reading,

Read the 'about section ' for info on WWII aircraft in Russia

The Henry Broquet stuff is interesting but if adding some pellet of voodoo causes an increase in the octane level of your fuel surely that's pointless as the manufacturer will have tuned the engine for a particular octane level of normally available fuel?

I recall testing of various products, including broquet and the like when 4 star was withdrawn from the market.

None of the in tank "catalysts" did anything measurable and did not prevent valve seat recession.

I'll see if i can find the original testing done, this refers to it under 'metal pellets'

Seems the Broquet Catalyst is tin based and may actually be a real thing. I found and old thread on a forum where someone claims Japanese cars imported from Japan where higher octane fuel is used would have these catalysts fitted in the tank. https://www.pprune.org/archive/index.php/t-70278.html

They were found to do nothing when classic car magazine tested them on old pre unleaded cars which ran 4 star which is higher octane than typical unleaded and contained lead which also protects the valve seats.

I wonder if the original use on Hurricane fighters produced results because the original Russian fuel was so below par. Maybe the effect diminishes the nearer to 100 Octane the fuel is.

Back home I expect the RAF stopped buying expensive fuel and just lobbed a few lumps in. Thinking

Any documentary evidence of this happening? And if they did put something in the tank, is this the same?

Maybe it was propaganda to get the Nazis to waste time looking into it.

The stuff we use at Reno is 168 octane.
