After being lucky for a few years, finally someone has had a go at my old versys while parked at my girlfriend's in kensington, liverpool. No damage but we noticed the bike had been physically moved about a foot, presumably to check out the locks, this was well away from the road outside her window. Sad

It had to have been lifted as there was a disc lock on rear and D lock on the front wheel, and they hadn't changed positions, so I'm guessing a couple of guys tried to lift it and gave up. I normally have more locks on but forgot that week.

Naturally I scarpered back to birmingham the next morning and haven't been back since, as the first rule of stealers is they'll be back, better tooled up next time.

So my options seem to be:

1) Bring more locks / chains next time. I've got an Almax series 4 and a series 3 at home, and a few more disc locks.
2) Rent out a storage unit that allows bikes, and walk from there to hers
3) Try and get there by public transport (massively difficult, not gonna happen)
4) Get a cheap old car
5) Get a barely running £500 bike I don't mind getting stolen
6) Never set foot in liverpool again Razz

There's nothing to lock the chains to though, I suppose I could try the concrete in a bucket approach. I also don't want to confront anyone myself, being a weakling, and them all having machetes etc these days, and my life is worth too much to me.

Right for now I've gone with option 6.

Oh yeah my question : What would you guys recommend to do, and ..

If I do park up there, I'm wondering if there's some other ways I can make it non functioning should it get nicked. I've thought of taking the seat off, taking the battery out, fuses out, ECU I can't get to easily .. are these good ideas and is there anything else easy that would make it non-functioning? Neutral

Sorry to hear that your girlfriend lives in Liverpool. Sad

With nothing to chain the bike to, your options are somewhat limited as the bike can always just be lifted into the back of a van.

There must be something you could chain the bike to though?

If all else fails, buy a water butt, put a chain through it and then fill your butt with rubble and concrete. Thumbs Up

Yeah my thoughts entirely. Britain's largest open plan prison, apparently.

Wahey synchronicity she's come through Very Happy , it seems one of her friends who sadly died (biker), his sister will let us use his garage at their house, and it's not too far. Hopefully I can find something to chain it to there, it looks in a safer street. And hopefully he will watch over it from biker heaven.

Still be interested to hear whether taking out battery / seat / fuses is a good idea in dodgy areas?

I pretty much think at this point you need a garage to be able to sleep at night and expect your bike to be there next morning.

The old BCF solution to the I haven't got anything to chain it to was to make a heavy weight to chain it to. With a piece of pipe to thread your chain through.

This was often a bucket of concrete. A 1sqft cube is 65 kilos.

Go to B&Q and buy ready mixed fence-post mix, buy something round or something that won't fall apart from the weight of the concrete.

Add scrap iron and stones into it. Add water to the fence post mix and pour it in.

IIRC 1 kilo litre of concrete is 0.4 kilos so a 40litre water butt will be 20-30kilos.

Pics of girlfriend to know if she's worth the hassle.

Not really joking though. If she's a keeper, rescue her. If not, you might as well bail now.

Buy an alarm and get it fitted, it may scare them off or alert someone if they try it again. Get one with a pager so you dont have to look out the window every 5 minutes.

It really isn't. I know this because a concrete doesn't float on water...

Concrete is closer to 2.4 kg/L.

INB4 "aircrete blocks" - No. Just don't. FYI your estimate of 20-30 kilos at 0.4 kg/L in a 40 L vessel made me die inside.

It ok, no-one in Liverpool actually sounds like cilla black. Laughing

With regards to the op. I grew up around Kensington and would NEVER park a bike there. In fact, my dad lives just down the road in Old Swan and I take the bus down to visit for the same reason. Neutral
