Good evening,
I've got a question to which finding the answer online seems nearly impossible, and that is why I decided to ask here. So I have B and A2 driving license, but it from a country in the EU, not British. I will be exchanging it for a British one ASAP.
I will be having a bike that's 125cc (A1 cat). Do I have to pass a CBT before riding, even though I have A2? Furthermore, in my case, am I required to display the L plate?
I really hope you can clear this out for me!
Kindest regards,
Ivan

In principle a 'European' driving licence is the same accross the union, and the groups of entitlement on one issued any-where by the union, are just as valid in any other country in the union.

So if you have an 'full' A2 '45bhp' motorcycle entitlement, not learner entitlement, then its valid accross the EU... and when you have surrendered your native (wherever that is) issued EU licence for a UK issued EU licence, should have exactly the same entitlements on it... and you should be legally allowed to ride exactly the same bikes you could 'at home'.

BUT UK licence afgency is notoriouse for getting things wrong... so be worth while 'loosing' your other durastiction EU licence and asking your 'home' issuing office for a replacement.... surrender replacement to UK DVLA office to get UK Licence.. so IF they accidentally forget to put eligible groups on it... you have the old original to 'find' as proof they should put groups back on!

Otherwise you should be able to ride any bike up to 45bhp and over weight limits.... no CBT or 'Compulsary Basic Training' course required.

BUT... we dont drive on the right side of the road, we drive on the right side, as in the correct, side of the road, which is the LEFT side of the road in this country.... unlike the rest of europe, so whether you need do a course to get an entitlement UK licencing dont recognise or not.... PROBABLY worth talking to a school, and seeing if they do some sort of 'Back-To-Bikes' course or offer refresher lessons etc, to get a bit clued up on UK road laws and conventions, and general mayhem.... its a very people packed little island, with a lot more traffic compared to most other placed on the continent!!!

School will also be best clued up to review your documents and give specific advice vis swapping licence with UK licence office.

Because Brexit? You can ride on your Euro licence indefinitely, without exchanging it, and I honestly don't see that changing. Oh, I guess it will make insurance easier and cheaper.

No.

No.

I agree with Tef: keep your current licence photocard, at least until you have a UK replacement that shows B and A2, confirmed by Friend Computer.

Never, ever surrender or lose it.

Haha I wouldn't be having problems with left-hand side driving, as I've been working as a cyclist for the past year now.

Ok, that's some great news saving me a few quids.
I thought I send the D9 doc with my current plastic to the agency in order to have it exchanged, no?

This does not instill a lot of confidence, given that cyclists seem to pick and choose when they follow ANY road convention.... like using the pavement, or stopping for red lights, etc etc etc Shocked Might suggest that a refresher course of even a basic CBT, perhaps even a cyling-proficiency course would NOT go a miss lol!

Hmm, it's not entirely clear what they expect.

What I would suggest is that you retain at least one copy of your EU licence in case DVLA lose your A2 entitlement. They went through a patch of doing that, and they will never admit fault.

Quoting for reinforcement.

The DVLA have a nasty habit of doing this, and you need proof you have passed your test. Usually, the only way to do this is to make sure you retain your photocard. You can do this by getting anew one from the country of issue, stating you have lost your photocard. Send them the replacement card & D9, and if they do remove entitlement, you can "find" you old card. Never send them all your cards, this can happen more than once.

Even though there were apparently bike cops who'd suddenly lost entitlement. Fwiw I myself do believe there were. And a fair few civvies as well. I shouldn't ever be surprised that an authority like the DVLA would never admit fault - yet somehow I always am.
