Has anyone used MEK (butanone) to fix ABS plastic? I've got an ABS mudguard stay that's gone ping, and thought about butting the snapped off part and bracing behind with a flat piece of ABS (after stripping the colour coat...!). Any useful advice appreciated...

No, but I have used a soldering iron to melt ABS and repair an inner wheel well on a Jeep. I melted in another lump of abs. It wasn't pretty but with a bit a patience it didn't look too bad. I believe the correct way to weld abs is with a specialist hot air gun.

OK. Now, I have some experience in using MEK to repair ABS mouldings. Don'd contaminate yourself with it, because it's *nasty*, but it is absolutely wonderful stuff. Dead simple repair. Good as new.

Next, to find out whether abraded ABS parts can be "built up" as aluminium or steel items can be with weld. I assume yes.

Safer (probably - since I never used MEK) would be plumber's 'solvent weld' glue used on waste pipes, which, guess what? - are made of ABS!

Yes, went to Wickes before buying MEK.... they stock ABS pipe fittings, and solvent cement. 99p gets a white ABS conversion bend (roundabouts are a good source of ABS too Sad ), you can buy flat sheets of ABS at model shops. Floplast solvent cement sold there contains at least some MEK (it says on the data sheet).

So, ABS is easily found, in lots of colours. It can be shaved down with a knife into thin shavings and dissolved overnight in MEK to make custom-grade ABS cement! As thick or thin as you like. Nitrile gloves turn to soggy corn-flakes in MEK oh dear. I used a marmite jar (glass and lid is polypropylene, both MEK-safe) to dissolve the ABS in.

The mudguard is much better now. Used hair drier with nozzle close to ABS to get hot & bend out distortions, MEK to butt-joint the snapped-off stay before sticking on a piece of flattened-out ABS pipe socket with MEK to strengthen. I'll see if I can get round to posting a pic.

Yes please pictures would be interesting. I've a stab at side-panel repairs etc.. but with qualified success..

Work in progress.... Dear God, it'll only allow a 1MB attachment... hang on...

So, we've got the plastic around the screw holes cemented, and the broken stay butted and reinforced. There's more reinforcement to do on the stay, which reinforcement will be thinned at the edges so that it will be "invisible",m and the outside of the stay will be filled and rubbed down prior to spraying the whole mudguard (probably maybe just the stay; good ol' Lidl lacquer). The plastic around the screw holes will be reinforced with a thin piece of ABS on the inside.

Mudguard "considered finished", son's first attempt at spraying lacquer from a tin.

Bent ABS straightened using hair drier pressed up close/10mm from the plastic to restrict air flow and make things hot, surprised the hair drier didn't suffer.

Ye Gods, how am I supposed to add pictures properly? Off for a look at the FAQ.
