A friend of mine has received an envelope which was sent via Royal Mail signed for. The envelope contained nothing inside apart from a slightly smaller, blank envelope. What’s more, the outer envelope was addressed to him but didn’t contain his name! Instead, it was;

First line of address
Town
Postcode

It seems a bit dodgy to me, like somebody trying to gain information on a house, e.g when the owners are out etc. I checked the tracking number and I can see the only sorting office is the one from the town it was sent, so the envelope can’t have travelled far! Also, I can see the ‘item’ has now been signed for, so whoever sent it now knows the surname of my friend and also what their signature looks like!!

I’ve pointed this out to him, and mentioned he should call the old bill. Not that they’ll do anything!

Has this or something similar happens to anyone on here? Anyone else have an opinion?

Hmm, interesting theory, but why put anything at all into the outer envelope? If your theory were correct, the sender neednt have put anything in there.

Tell him to look again, the smaller envelope might contain

A microdot, because he is a spy.
A pube, from an anonymous admirer.
Ricin or Novichuck, check his pulse (with gloves on).
A breath of fresh air, from a holidaying relative.
The hopes and tears of an old flame.

Or

Maybe his granny meant to put a fiver in but has gone a bit forgetful.

Whatever, its probably nothing to worry about.

Call the police?? Laughing Laughing Laughing

The postmark will give an idea of where it was sent from.

Your mates signature is just a random squiggle.

But... his ID is going to be stolen, he'll be brutally murdered and his house ransacked. Thumbs Up

The only conclusion you can draw from that statement is that you sent the package! Wink

He may have purchased something from Ebay and the seller has scammed him with just an envelope that to ebay is the item.

If this is the case, tell him to skip ebay disputes and open one in paypal, they deal with these things better.

It happened to me.

I know, he may as well not bother!

The signature is more than a squiggle tbf, it’s fairly obvious that it’s a surname. Besides, Royal Mail actually states the surname on their track and trace website. That said, it was actually his MIL that signed for it so perhaps he won’t mind if she’s brutally murdered. I joke of course. Laughing

This. Or some other dodgy person who is going to require "proof" of delivery of something (may be just a document) for some fraudulent reason in the future. Your friend should have a think what that might be. Some sort of paperwork relating to tenancy maybe? I'm inclined to think the ebay solution is less likely, as the tracking information will record the weight of the parcel; it's therefore smarter to at least send something of matching weight to the purchased item.

Don't know why the envelope has writing on it. I would certainly have your mate hotfoot it down the local nick with this stuff to log this and hopefully get an incident number, in advance of whatever shit is going to hit the fan.

I’ll mention to him about it being a scam through eBay. I hadn’t thought of that earlier, however I think it’s now the most likely scenario.

Just for the avoidance of doubt, the address with no name was on the outside envelope. The inner envelope (which was padded like the external envelope) was totally blank.

Woah! So many questions! Smile

Good point, it may be intended for his mil. Or even his mother-in-laws mother! (milm?) They’ve all lived there for 3 years give or take.

I haven’t mentioned the eBay theory to him yet, that may shed some light on the situation.

He doesn’t live a life of bare drama, not by BCF’s standards anyway. For example, If he said he owned an R1, he would. It wouldn’t later turn out to be bullshit. And if he did own the metaphorical R1, he wouldn’t leave it in bits, lay on its side in the street for the council to remove. Pretty sure he likes cats though, and I’m sure the sight of one indulging in a spot of felatio would be moderately amusing to him.

Anyway, I’ll mention the eBay thing to him and see what he says!

Are you sure?

https://www.royalmail.com/track-your-item#/tracking-results/GK845895694GB

The weight of the parcel and cost is only on the senders receipt.

Freddyfruitbat said that, not me! I’m inclined to agree with you Pjay.

I’ve sent him a text and mentioned the eBay thing. I’ll see what he says about it!

Sorry, formatting error!

Yeah, it's a common enough thing for a scammer to do it seems.
I got caught buying SD cards, seller just sent a plain envelope with nothing in it, I obviously signed for it. Paypal refunded me as it seemed I was not the only person they had done it to and they needed no evidence, I just put the reason as wrong item sent and within a few days I had my money back. Ebay wanted pictures and loads of waiting time for the seller to respond, which he never did.

Yes I realise that; poor choice of words maybe. Although it's not available on screen to the parcel recipient, the parcel weight is certainly recorded in Royal Mail's tracking system and any obvious mismatch in the weight of the item actually dispatched and the weight of the item supposed to have been dispatched will be instantly obvious to the most cursory enquiry. So would be a pretty dim attempt at covering up a fraud (which is not to say it's not still possible! Rolling Eyes )

The web tracking does not contain the information, how do you expect him to find the weight? You may indeed call royal mail and get some information from them, but Ebay/Paypal wont accept emails or you reciting phone calls as evidence.

A red coloured frog eyed alien Dude says, 'It's a Trap'.

Inside the envelope there must have been some message.

Tell him to hold the inner piece over a light bulb and the message will be revealed.

There is no tracking for things sent by Royal Mail signed for. Wink

The value of the stamps on the envelope give some idea of how much it weighed when it was sent.

But it's an empty envelope not addressed to anyone, there is no conspiracy theory angle to it and there is nothing interesting about it. If someone wanted to know if your house is empty so they can rob it, they're not going to go sending empty envelopes in the post.

Unless it was meant to contain your SkyWaterFriend® then this thread isn't going to becomes amazing. Crying or Very sad

There is tracking, I’ve already tried it Wink

Anyway, you’re probably right. There’s probably nothing more to it than somebody randomly posting a blank envelope via signed for delivery despite knowing only the recipients address.

Come to think of it, maybe it was Adam Aarons trying to send out a message? Spooky.
