All,

I have had my Yamaha SR125 for about 2 weeks now, done around 200 mile on her...she rides loverly...

The question is, when do I top up the oil?!?

The guy who I bought it off, showed me that when the bike is on level ground you can see the oil level on the engine. I have just been riding and decided to take a look...can't see oil. I am guessing that it's all too hot in there, and the oil has sloshed around and probably expanded too...so I will check in the morning. But my question is, generally, how often do you/should you top of the oil?

Thanks,

Chad.

It shouldn't burn any oil, but sometimes they can for different reasons. Best thing to do is just check it from cold every week, whilst the bike is upright. If it's low top it up, but make sure that you don't exceed the maximum level marker, otherwise you'll blow seals and all sorts.

I've had mine for a couple of months but only been riding it for 4 weeks. Very pleased with it. I changed the oil and cleaned the filter as I wasn't sure when it had been last done, and I would be sure it was filled to the right level. When cold and on the centrestand the sightglass is full. Don't check when hot as it takes some time for the oil to work it's way down. I check it once a week together with tyres and chain.

Regards - John

John,

Thanks for that. Out of interest, what do you check for on the chain? I am assuming how much it can give?

Chad.

Just the chain tension. While it's on the centrestand and in neutral after checking the tyre pressure, brake fluid and oil level, I just walk round and spin the wheel while looking through the spy cutout in the chain guard to make sure the chain stays within the view marks.

Before I rode the bike and after 600 miles I wiped the chain with degreaser and then sprayed with chain wax. Only done it twice but that's a grubby job. Currently clocking up 150-200 miles a week.

Hope this helps.

Thanks John..I will certainly take your advice and check out the chain. I am doing about 20 miles a week, and the wife about the same.

Still learning you see.

Kind regards,

Chad.
