PostPosted: 20:58 - 11 Jul 2018    Post subject: Motorway comfortable begginer bike for 6ft7 Man, 39" In Reply with quote

Hi All,

I have looked on the internet for suggestions on this but haven't found anything of use. I am 6ft7 with a 39" inseam and I'm looking for a bike to commute to work. I travel 40mins each way and 30 of these minutes I'm sat at 60-70mph. I have only road a motorcycle a few times, once in Greece on mini Moto and once on a scrambler outside wormwood scrubs... So my experience is very limited.

Do any of you fine people's have a suggestion for a bike that would fit me as a starter bike that is comfortable on motorways?

Thanks in advance!!!

Quick, before Mike finishes typing! We've only got 3 or 4 hours!

GS, V-Strom, Versys, Tiger Explorer. Put a gel seat / cushion / sheep rind on it to increase the seat-to-peg distance.

Or have you considered a TDM?

GSX1250F is always worth considering just on sheer metal-for-the-money basis.

What's your budget?

Was looking at 3500 Max for my first bike really.
Not sure who Mike is but I am now worried about him.... Should I be worried?

I have also had a look into them, I do like the look of the triumph tiger (but worried about the cost) and saw the versys-300x which I thought was lovely, but not sure about the capability for the motorway. I guess I'm looking for something cheapish that I can make mistakes on. Do you think the power of the bikes mentioned at 600cc + would be an issue?

How much do you weigh?
Only asking as if you're bit of a lump then a larger engine with a bit more torque will be much easier to ride.

No experience of the others Rog has mentioned. But I am 6-3 and use the gsx1250 to motorways and it's brill.

I've had to rotate the footpegs to give a bit more comfort... You can adjust the seat height as well.

But you are freakishly tall! 6-7!!! Fuck.

Try a 1250... But I'd say an adventure bike would suit. Maybe a dorsoduro?

Where are you? Want to join my basketball team?

For motorway riding?

While you can safely ride pretty much any bike on the motorway, I'd suggest it's not best suited. Also OP will have to have passed his full test before riding on the motorway anyway so a world of larger bikes is open to him.

The winky empoticon is all well and good but if the OP wanted something for an urban commute, he could do worse than a grom. I have a mate who is 6'8" and he rode a Cub 90 into work for years

Anything 600cc plus in the adventure category. Except the crossrunner, it's shorter than most of the others and suits me at a whole foot less. Roger mentioned most of them. The versus comes in 650 and 1000cc form too. Also varadero 1000 if cheap is a requirement.

What about a foot forward hairy davison type thing with high bars?

Mind you, if you haven't even done a CBT yet its all a bit academic.

Start with a 125 Canyonero

Firstly, I am worried that something that powerful could be too much for my first bike? I have had a look at the dorsoduro and I love.the look of supermotos, but I worried that these wouldnt be great for an hour of motorway travel a day?

Secondly, I am extremely poor basketball, rugby is my game. Farnham, Surrey is where I am based.

Not a fan of cruisers at all. However I have sat on a couple of Harley's at my workplace and my legs seem to long for these. I love the look of supermotos but, from watching videos and doing research, understand these aren't the best commuters or motorway riders. I have had a look on the cycle ergo website at many of the adventure bikes mentioned and seem to be getting on average about 80 hip angle and 65 knee angle. When looking at the dorsoduro (as mentioned) as an example I get 88 hip angle and 72 knee angle..... Not sure what to make of it all really, as I haven't ridden much I dont know if the 80/65 is comfortable enough for a 45 minute commute or not

You definitely don't want a Dorso for your requirements.

Power - depends on how much of a ham fisted idiot you want to be. On bikes with decent fuelling and smooth throttle responses it's not a problem because you only go as fast as you choose to by twisting the throttle.

I mention this specifically because the KTM 990 definitely doesn't have decent fuelling or smooth throttle action, meaning it's a complete dick to ride sometimes and needs a careful hand, so on zero experience it's not the bike for you. But later on, it's the bike for you.

Yes, a powerful bike can catch the inexperienced out, but more relevant is the way it delivers that power, and how much self control you have.
Plenty of people are fine on bigger bikes. My first big bike had 80hp, I didn't die. Next bike was 130hp, and more.... interesting.

On most.adventures I am seeing an average of 80 hip angle and 65 knee angle. Would you say this is comfortable enough for 1.5 hours riding daily?
