Ok, bit of an unusual one.
The corner of the outer case of an SD card I have broke off, not sure how, I just noticed it after I removed it from my mp3 player to put more music on.
It's the corner at the contact end, opposite the angled corner.
The player and my pc no longer read the card.
I actually split the case open to remove the board inside to see if there was any damage. Couldn't see anything.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I might be able to access the files?

can you not get a 256mb card for pennies, and use the casing for that for your board?

Hmmm, maybe, but opening up an SD card involves a bit of manglement.
It does give me an idea however, I might be able to cut the new case in such a way that I could slide the board out and fit mine in.

I wondered if electrical contact cleaner may work, but you've already opened the case. Sometimes SD card has micro sd in it but it was board in it. It looks difficult.

Some data recovery company's HP had example pics.
They removed NAND IC from the board and soldered it again on the exactly same type of the board.

They did this because they found the "board" was not working.

Only if your board itself wasn't dead, there maybe a chance you buy a cheap SD card adapter, open the case, and solder it's terminal and your board directly. (I don't want to do it myself)

You might be able to create a card extender by killing an existing card, and then running thin wires from the contacts on the dead card out of the reader onto the contacts on the live but damaged card. Might be fiddly and you've got to be precise, but there's no reason why it won't work.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

This'll have to be one of those rainy day jobs I think.
I do have one of those magnifying lights, so that should make things easier.
I think I'll try what I have in mind first before I get the soldering iron out.

SD cards are very cheap. Is the data on the card worth the trouble?

If it is, soldering little wires onto the connectors shouldn't be too hard and it looks like you won't be the first to do it (https://www.jbprojects.net/articles/wrt54gl_mods/soldered.jpg)

Loose end.

We sort of have a winner but without the need for further surgery.
I bought a cheap reader with ports shallow enough so that I could insert the board.
The reader on the pc is a full depth, click in type.
Initially, it didnt work but I managed to wedge a piece of the old case in next to the board so that contact was made.

Backing up card as I type.

Man beats machine, again.
