Hi all

Another what bike thread!

So I’m sitting at the side of the road broken down again on the Honda Xr 125. I have one which is still not repaired and now this one (my dad’s) - pretty sure engine has had it.

I’m thinking of getting a newer bike but I need this spec:

Commuter
75ish mpg?
Undesirable to thieves
Won’t overheat (commute in London can be standstill)
Light
Maneuverable through traffic
ULEZ compliant
Max £2.5k

Any ideas where to start looking? I think it’s leaning more to the 125 market but wouldn’t mind a few more CCs if there’s anything about.

Thanks

Deauville?

CB500? but neither of those will reach 75 mpg I don't think.

I've been doing this type of thinking recently.

Doesn't the new CB125F claim something stupid like > 130 mpg? but may be out of budget.

MSX125 seem to report >100 mpg too from owners on here and look quite fun but might attract thieves.

Something like a CBF250?

Fuelly seems to report around 75mpg, and you get a bit more grunt over a 125

Inazuma 250, if you can find one.
Kwak Z250SL, if you can find...
Surprisingly, the CBF250 was apparently sold until 2012, so would be ULEZ compliant, but only if you can...

250/300 bikes aren't exactly thick on the ground, so the CB500F is probably the most likely to exist while coming closest to your requirements.

Cb500 is what if be looking at, X version preferred though that might be tight on budget. Do you do a lot of miles? If not then mpg might not be so crucial and there might be other options.

Why come prefer?

I mean, for the same price, I'd probably go for the X too, but if I was chiselling pennies, I'd look out for an F and give it the teeth sucking and "I mean, nobody wants them, but I could do you a favour..."

Deauville

Commuter - yup
75ish mpg? - 50 to 55mpg on my 50mile round trip, motorway, A road and a few miles of town.
Undesirable to thieves - definitely!
Won’t overheat (commute in London can be standstill) - shouldn't do, not experienced any overheating through Bristol
Light - no, 230kg ish
Maneuverable through traffic - good for it's weight
ULEZ compliant - no idea, unlikely
Max £2.5k - got mine for a grand

But, very reliable and low maintenance.

Shaft drive, so no chain adjustments required, takes 15mins or so to change the oil, which I plan to do on an annual basis, most of which is allowing the old oil to drain out.

Great bike for commuting in my experience

Honda innova.

However, you might stand a chance of an NC700 for your budget if you shop around. Mid 60's mpg. Easy to ride. Undesirable to theives. A "white goods" commuter bike.

I guess "recommend my current bike regardless of the OP's needs" is a BCF staple, but you even listed the reasons why it's wrong for them. I doff my metaphorical cap.

On that note!

NC700

Ticks every box except weight 210-220kg depending on variant.
Lowest price ones look to be starting at £2.5k, easy to manoeuvre, ulez compliant. I don't think they are particularly desirable (certainly not a piece of Italian exotica)

The storage box is mega handy too.

After riding one of these (a '750 X' version) as a hire bike for the last couple of weeks following an accident, I was starting to wish I had been killed in the collision.

Being gang raped would be considerably more comfortable.

Rice cakes are considerably more exciting.

Thumbs Down

A Honda cm250. The mere sight make me feel queasy, must be the least desirable bike ever - surely must do the required mpg and light for sure.
This beauty even has a stylish fairing..

Sorry wasn't meant to down vote 'Redundant'! - was meant to be helpful

Edit: Just realised I've done this for bloody everyone! FML!

Appreciate the suggestions apart from the prius..

Is ok, I've revoked them for you. It might have dropped your own rating a little.

CBR250. Should be able to get them for next to nothing, although people are asking extortionate amounts for them.

Duke200, probably doesn't fit the undesirable category though. Could always remove the KTM stickers and cover in black vinyl wrap.

Arnt there any Chinq versions of stuff like the CBF 250 around, with EFI and catalysts, new enough for ULEZ and cheap enough for a nearly brand new bike for the budget.

Haha, it's still a good commuter bike, it can't compete with a 125 for mpg and weight though.
