Honda Cub C70 Will not start

Hi,

I'm looking for advice, I've got Honda Cub C70 1986, The bike will not start and hasn't started for many years now but this spring I've cleaned out the fuel line plus put inline filter on, fresh fuel, cleaned out the carb, new air filter, new spark plug and new battery and also I cleaned up the magneto fly wheel.

even after all that work it still won't start, little to no compression on kick starter without the choke being fully open.

the fuel is getting to spark plug I can smell it on the plug.

spark plug sparks outside the chassis when tested.

thats about it just cant get it to come back to life.

Has that one got points? If so, they're notoriously difficult to set exactly right. Most likely the timing will be out a teeny bit. When I had one I got a timing light and had the process down to an art. But even doing up the screw put it out slightly so you have to compensate for this while you're setting it.

I had a look for the points I cant see them on the magneto am i right in thinking they would be behind the flywheel?

Yes the points are 'inside' the flywheel. Look through the slot in the front as you turn the flywheel and you'll see a small screw with a plate behind it which has a slot in the edge. That slot is for adjusting the gap with a screwdriver.

Can't remember if you can get on the C70 points with a (brass) feeler gauge to set the gap, I always do it by eye and set the timing with a small bulb.

Brass feeler gauges eh? Didn't know they existed, now that would have saved a lot of frustration back in the day..
