I have been riding an old royal Enfield(350 cc), the ones with the gear on the right side, for nearly five years now. It belonged to my father. That was back in India. I have moved to the uk and want to buy a motorcycle. The problem is that I am 17 years old and can only ride 125cc motorbikes as that is the rule here(I was riding without a license in India). As my fathers bike was an old British bike the gear was on the right hand side. I can’t ride newer bikes with the gear on the left side, because I get confused with the gear and brakes. I have been in 2 crashes on newer bikes because of this. I was wondering if someone could suggest an old British 125cc motorcycle with the gear on the right side or some way I could get a license for a bigger bike earlier as I have experience on driving on the road.
Thanks in advance.

... and yet can't figure out which pedal to press. Wink

Bantam 125?

I think you'd be much better off getting used to the new layout than trying to find a suitable old-style bike. They are few and far between as it wasn't a particularly popular capacity prior to the licence changes in the early 80's.

Increase the travel on the rear brake pedal until you get the hang of it Smile

Lots of Indians here don't bother with pesky licences and tests either, you'll be in good company. Of course it's
out of the question for you to attain the licence you need for your vehicle by doing the proper training
and enough of it (which should fix your confusion between left and right feet and basic motorcycle controls.) followed by
genuine actual passes on the necessary tests. But no, there always has to be a workaround. Done your CBT yet? Got a
provisional licence with your actual name on it yet or are you just gonna simply sack all that old "the law" bollocks if you
can get your hands on the right antique bike?

No there isn't some way you can get a big bike earlier.

Another vote here for learning to ride with the gear shift on the left and brake on the right as to do anything else is just putting off the inevitable.

erm....doesn't the aprilia rs125 have the gear lever on the right?
must be a rotax thing cos my ccm had the kick start on the left also (suited me I'm left handed/footed😊)
must say I never had problems with bikes having levers on opposite sides, takes 5mins to adjust to it.

cheers,
GAZ

Practice. Get used to it.

Anything learner legal with a RHS gearshift will be old, unreliable and difficult to get spares from. I do know some of the early suzukis had swappable gear/brake levers.

However. It isn't hard to change which foot you use.

I have a VFR750 and an Enfield 350 and I sometimes ride my wifes YB100. The VFR is 1 down, five up with the left foot. The Enfield is 1 up, three down with the right foot and the YB100 is four down lith the left foot. I can ride any of them.

I will admit that I occasionally do get mixed up and try to brake with the gear lever (or most often, upshift the Bullet when I meant to downshift). However, I've never even come close to crashing the bike because of it.

So. Stop blaming the tools and sort out the worker.

I thought this was your "first bike". If you mean in India, well, it turns out that you're going to need to re-learn the way you ride if you want to pass any tests over here[*].

No. Don't be so silly. You're 17, not 67: relearn.

Join the army. Is actually one way.

[*] The other way is to ride unlicensed. It didn't bother you in India, why would it bother you here?

Oh dear. You'll have to get used to it, or come up with some sort of cross-linkage. It doesn't take long to get used to the change (!), if you're crashing you need to take it easier until. Down for up/up for down is entertaining too....
