Have to say that throughout all this, I'm drawn towards the foxeye Fazer 600 ... Seem quite cheap to buy and by most accounts they seem quite reliable. I could ride one of those for 2 years and it would have paid for itself, in my eyes...

Any known issues of this model? I think I know the earlier, boxier eyes version has terrible headlights but the engine is supposed to be bullet proof. But I need decent headlights.

As said, I do up to 400 miles a week on mine and it doesn't bother me in the slightest, I'm pretty comfortable on it. *Shrug*

Try doing 200-400 miles a day everyday and then tell us how comfortable it is.

Yamaha FZS600, the 2002-2003 models had a bigger 21 ltr tank. Easily get 200 miles until fuel light pops on with London commuting, out of town longer distance, 230-240 miles can be had before getting fuel light.

Getting on a bit, and only bikini fairing, and about to be hit by Euro3 restrictions in London, but otherwise a good solid, reliable and frugal choice of bike with enough beans for weekend fun.

I'll keep a look out Smile I'm just a scummy norverner and despite Leeds considering a consultation on a possibility of a LEZ for trade vehicles ONLY (which will hit private users too in the future) I should be able to get a couple of years commuting out of one I'd have thunk.

not sure if anyone else mentioned... but honda blackbird will do 250 miles to a tank without much effort.

in fact it'll do 200 miles when cruising at wholly illegal speeds.

I know OP said he wasn't considering BMWs in the main but older R1100/R1200s will easily crack 200. My R1200R is about 210 miles city, 250 motorway on a tankful. If you can find a GS or R without the dodgy ABS or electronic shenaneghans they can last for yonks too..

Invest in a scottoiler or similar if you go for a chain drive.

Better still don't get anything with a chain. Maintaining it is a hassle. After riding for that long every day the last thing you want to be doing is lubing a chain after been on the bike in sleet and rain in December after having had to work late and avoid cars trying to kill you and drains trying to topple you over.

Yes, the Sprint ST 1050 ought to do 200+ miles on a long fast run.

I've had over 200 miles on a few long runs, but usually I don't get that as my commute is too short (~15 miles) so I agree it's only just a 200 mile bike..

Ever since I bought the 600 I've drooled over the 1100. Let's see what comes out of this weekend.

Good choice.

I loved my ZZR1100. I had the C version, blue and black with ZZR1100 in lovely feminine pink, and that was well before the PC women are the masters scenario of nowadays. Laughing

Which one are you looking at?

It's a D (1997) in Candy Red (unsure of actual paint name). Few scuffs. Will need some front pads soon, advisory on recent MOT, some corrosion on parts including suspension linkage and brake torque arm but that's easily sorted just a bit of time in the shedarage (yeah, that's a shed come garage thing) over winter. I'll probably be on the lookout for an aftermarket rear shocker at some point too.

Really looking forward to it. A bike with much much much more power than I'll ever need and use but an iconic bike, in my eyes.

You can expect a few after 21 years.

Brakes need frequent attention. You will probably need new caliper
seals, unless they were replaced recently.

Look for up/down play at the rear wheel. This indicates worn
bearings in the rear link. Wear tends to be in the barrel/bushings,
so just replacing the bearings won't fix it. You need the full kit.

I have my red D5 for more than 5 years. I still roar like a lunatic
as it goes through peak torque at 8,000RPM+

Best of luck with it.

Thanks for that! Karma

I'm expecting to need to stay on top of the calipers. Are they the same tokicos that were on the 600E, off the top of your head? They look the same from pictures and I know they needed looking after before I went the Nissin route on the 6.

I'm looking at getting another used linkage so I'll likely bring it to work and ask the Engineers if they can press out the old, press in some new bearings so I can give it a proper refresh.

I'm getting pretty excited.

AFAIK, the 400,600 and 1100 use the same Tokico calipers.

It isn't too difficult to get the bearings out. I used a couple of sockets
and a bench vice as a press.

Check the bracket/arm from the cooling fan to the bottom of
the radiator. If it is corroded or broken, the sharp edge of the
metal cowling will eat a hole in the rad. This happened to mine
and to my mates ZZR11. A piece of strategically placed bicycle
inner tube will protect against this issue.

Next time you have the tank and airbox off, make sure you check
the valve clearances. This is much easier on the 11
than it is on the 600. No need to remove cams and no special
tools required.

The only other pitfall than comes to mind: Don't use petrol to
clean the foam air filter. Mine dissolved before my eyes Embarassed

I don't have to remove the cams for valve clearances?? That sounds magic!! It was such a pain on the 6!!

I'll be giving it a strip down and I'll check for that bracket you mention. It's done like 3000 miles in the past 3 years.

Pushing the rocker/follower sideways on the shaft allows easy
access to the shims. A magnetised flat screwdriver is useful for
extracting the shims from the top of the 'bucket'. Stuff a rag down
the camchain tunnel to reduce the risk of dropping shims into
the engine. The chain is at the end of the crank instead of
the middle as on the 600.

See section 15-1 of the PDF manual. Search for: ZX11_Service_93_01.pdf

Don't follow all the instructions in the manual. It is not necessary
to remove the main upper fairing/cowling or the carbs.

When you slide the rocker along the shaft, turn it so that it jams
against the top of the valve. This will leave you with both hands free for
changing the shim. It only takes a few seconds once you get the
hang of it.
