It's legal as several laws were passed years ago requiring employers to check right to work on the UK with a penalty I forget how much if they are found to be employing people who don't have the right to work in the UK.
IIRC there was an exemption of if you were employed before 2008 and are still with the company then there don't need to be retrospective checks. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. Hmmm? Someone without a passport may/could be an illegal?
Employer looks at your passport and photocopies it, then I guess the new General Data Protection Regulations would apply.
Something about not sharing that information unless you give them consent.
However these days employers do what they like with very little chance of any comebacks.
You complain and suddenly you get fired for some unexplained reason that has nothing to do with you not letting them use that information (passport data) ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now!

They are legally required to check your ID and keep a copy.
Yes, I was surprised too. It's to do with knee-jerk gangmaster legislation which seems to directly contravene the GDPR.
Mine settled for a poor quality photocopy of the front of my driving licence. I told them I wasn't prepared to allow them to have a colour scan of my passport because I don't trust their data security.
That said, I'm in a privelaged position because with current staffing, if I leave, the business folds, AND I'm TUPE so I don't actually have to play ball withthe HR department if I don't want to. I don't think people often speak to them like I do. My annual appraisal should have been filmed and monetised on youtube because I answered every question utterly truthfully. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. This. I worked for large, national chain of shops, now defunct.
At the time, I didn't posses a current passport. That employer insisted I get one, at my expense, or I would lose my job, nothing they can do, "it's the law". Told them I'd see them in an ACAS tribunal, and my solicitor sent them a letter informing them of the error of their ways. After all the dust settled, it turned out the HR bod was utterly useless, and decided everyone should have a passport, to save him work deciding if it something was valid proof of being a citizen. Several (large) payouts were given to staff that actually got booted over it in other, more diverse, stores.
They settled for a copy of my birth certificate and an apology in writing, which was amusing. I left not long after, writing was on the wall anyway, and that stunt made me a nice target. ____________________ '98 VFR800 (touring) - '12 VFR800 Crosrunner (Commuting) - '01 KDX220 (Big Green Antisocial Machine) |
