Bike stripped down to frame, on cleaning it up decided to hand paint black using Hammerite Smooth.

What a mistake! Not happy with the result and far too fiddly for me, didn't find the paint easy to use either (really too thick but I'm sure the instructions said don't thin).

Anyway, before I try to make a half decent job of it, I thought if anyone could recommend a Powder Coaters?

I'm in Bromley, Kent so the nearer the better.

Cheers, Ted

I've heard good things about R&G in Crayford

Powder coat is fashionable but I wouldn't dis-count a decent paint shop. When I tried to get my Kawasaki's swing arm and wheels powder-coated they couldn't match the paint so I asked them to just shot blast and etch-prime. I sanded them smooth and asked a local classic car place to paint them using supplies from RS Bike Paints. Interestingly they couldn't get on with the lacquer supplied ("like wood varnish") and used their own. Turned out lovely though, and the finish seems pretty hardy so far. I've been told powder coat chips easier than paint.

I don't know who'd do your frame, but if the Hammerite hasn't been on there too long, petrol will get it off. You might have to soak some rags in it and cling-film them to the frame for a while.

I know where you're coming from - Hammerite smooth by brush is pretty crap stuff as it doesn't flow very well IMO especially when it's as warm as this as there no time for it to flatten before it cures. Recently painted a few things with Granville cylinder black - still brush marks but a lot better and a slower cure (4 hrs to touch I would say)

I had the FJ1200 frame, fairing sub-frame,wheels and several other parts plastic coated by CPC in Borough Green near Wrotham (01732-886-556),just around the corner from the Oakdene cafe. They did a really good job for a very reasonable amount of money and the finish is excellent and hard wearing. No parts have chipped and I would readily recommend them Thumbs Up Very Happy Thumbs Up
