Took bike to local shop for service and tune because only getting 55mph, after getting it back its no good for more than 50... Have put new front sprocket on with 2 extra teeth since but still no joy and have to change down to 4th to go faster , any advice welcome.

10.19 HP (7.4 kW)) @ 8250 RPM

How fast do you expect it to go?
Its ONLY a 10bhp commuter bike; I really wouldn't expect one, any one, to get over 60 very often anyway; and yours is a Super-Retard with high wide MX bars hanging you rider out like a Human parachute....

55mph is also the Asian speed limit for lightweight motorcycles, very likely that that is as fast as the thing is ever designed to go.

GEARING.... yeah... taller gears do NOT necessarily make you go faster.

Power is Force x Speed.

That's first principle of Nwetonian fizziks... gears increase speed at the expense of force, or increase force at the expense if speed; SO you can ONLY ever go as fast as you have enough power for....

And 10bhp is just about enough for 60mph, give or take, and with high wide MX derived stying it gonna be more less than more.

It MAY be hampered a bit more if you have tendency to short shift and use taller gears, and dont let the thing rev out.

Only makes max power at max power engine revs; wind resistance increases with speed; so very common for bikes to top-out at about 55mph in top for simple reason that at 55mph in top they are pulling less than peak-power revs; they MIGHT have power to go faster but you'd have to change down a gear to get the rev's up to find it... in top, if you short shift, you can get into top by maybe 35-40mph, but as you accelerate, wind resistance increases faster with the speed you put on than the power increases with revs, and at around 55mph, you might have some more revs to go before peak power, but at the lower revs in top, you dont have enough power to accelerate there.. hence they can actually go faster on LOWER gearing than on higher...

My 125 makes the old full-quota of 12bhp; its actually 'faster' on a one tooth smaller drive sproket lowering gearing, than it is on stock. Lowers overall drive ratio by aprox 6%, and the 'theoretical' top speed falls from aprox 75mph to aprox 70... but I get there a little bit quicker, and more often.... 'cos anything over 60, is pretty much in the lap of luck on a 12bhp 125, and only going to happen in favourable conditions, like when theres a slight slope or a favorable tail-wind!

On a 10bhp 125? Be greatful it does 55!!! Still faster than most UK speed limits! If it aint enough... well, you got the wrong bike.... anything with dirt bike styling or pretensions is starting from behind, anything with a little learner-legal engine displacement like-wise... you want more fast.... dont pick a super-retard; you want more fast still, make sure you have licence, and pick something larger than 125cc.... even fastest of the fast non-learner-legal 125's you need a full-licence for, are at best barely 100mph motorcycles.... and in world of full-licence bikes, that really AINT all that quick..... its about as fast as a thirty odd year old Honda 250 four-stroke single commuter bike, and still begs around 27-30bhp to manage it.

Few extra mph you might get from a 125, IF that is whats really important, REALLY are not to be found by messing with cogs; they is to be found with serious amounts of tuning...... and getting a 10bhp 4-stroke single to break the UK national speed limit, is going to take 50% more bhp than you got, and a heck of a lot of really effective tuning to STILL be held back by them aerodynamics of retard styling.... you are unlikely to even breach A1 licence limit power messing with that motor, and illadviced tuning mods like ditching the air-filter and adding a noisy pipe is likely to loose you power as well as pee-off the neighbors....

Advice; Stick it back to stock; do a decent service; get all it aught have 'as standard';... and if that aint enough.... ponde other bikes... that do the speed you want them too..... 70mph is legal limit in the UK, and a premium 125 with more than 12bhp will do that... anything that begs a full licence, even a thirty year old Honda commuter will equally do it, more easily and more cheaply.... your call.

The mention of the human parachute..
I had a YB100 and was giving a mate a carry into Newcastle for some bits. We were doing fine at 55mph. Mate decides to hook his feet under the pegs, undo his jacket and hold it open. We dropped instantly to 15mph - like a drag car at the end of a run.

The advice above is very very good. With smaller less powerful engines you have to try every trick - smaller lower bars, less weight (for acceleration), ignore that bigger front sprocket idea (because if the powa isn't there it won't work) etc.

So 55 mph was slow? , what were you getting out of it before you noticed that you only get 55mph out of it?
Now it will only do 50 mph after a service/tune?

It’s your bike, you must be able to notice the difference in how it ‘feels ‘ to ride?

Did the dealer change any parts?
Did the dealer reset anything?
It might be a good idea to find out.

Thanks for the really helpful and funny advice.
The bike is a practice tool for direct access and hopefully it'll soon be a thing of the past blah blah blah

If you aint had lessons to be taught anything, what you got to 'practice'?

Go get the lessons.... if DAS you'll likely get the licence with them; THEN you'll have something to practice..... remember most of the learning comes after the lessons and licence, not before.

Going it alone on a 125 on L's is the school of hard-knocks; it doesn't teach you anything, it just punishes you, normally with physical pain, for getting things wrong... which you still have to work out what it was, and more, what to do different to do it right.....

IF lessons and licence are on the plan, cut to the quick, go get them lessons and licence, stop piddling around.

As said, I ride a 125, no one says you have to go get a GSZXRR Ninja-Blade of at least 700cc within a month of passing tests or they'll take the licence back off you; you get a Ride-What-You-Like licence.... so ride what you like... A-N-D if you want a 125 for practice.... go practice on a 125... without the L-Plates... and some lessons for you to practice, rather than making it up as you go, hoping it don't hurt too much!

125's are great training tools, demanding a heck of a lot of rider finesse and discipline to get anything, let alone the best out of them, and time on a tiddler to get that discipline and finesse isn't wasted... B-U-T... that 'practice' is not the practice you necessarily need to pass tests, and either way; without lessons to teach you what to practice, its just making it up as you go along, learning by school of hard knocks.

Old adage of the race track; You want faster bike? Fit a better rider! Better rider,is easier on the machine, so it dont break as easy; needs less maintenance and expensive brake pads chains, sprockets and tyres; they crash less, and have faster lap-times.... on the road, its all win; bikes faster, goes further, costs less, and still dont crash as easy.....

Want a better rider? Go get lessons, go get a licence, THEN practice, practice practice... to your hearts content... and you can do it on a bigger faster bike, if you like.
