Hi I am getting a new bike for the first time and was checking out my local craigslist to see what was out there. I am interested in a Kawasaki Ninja 300 because they are within my price range and not to powerful.

That being said, there are two which I am interested in and cost roughly the same. One being a 2015 with 600 miles on it and another being a 2017 with 4,000 miles on it.

Would it be smarter to get the slightly older one with few miles or the newer one which has been used more?

Sounds more like you're getting a second hand bike Very Happy

Those are both pretty low mileage. I'd take a look at the service history - there's a good chance that the 2015 one has never been serviced!

Are both models the same? A lot of models got an update for 2017 to comply with Euro IV.

Except I see you're not in Europe!

Still worth checking the specs though.

All else being equal, I would certainly go for the newer one.

But that's the thing, isn't it? What's the reason for the bike only having done 600 miles in 3 years? That's odd...

Buy it, ride it, don't particularly enjoy it. It's amazing how quickly a few years pass.

TBH if they were both the same bike I'd go with the colour I liked best.

It is; could be all sorts of reasons, including "there's something the matter with it", or "It's stood idle for three years". 4,000 miles in a year isn't very much, and at least shows the thing's likely to work. Smile

Otoh, maybe neither of them work. OP needs to find out detail about both. Mileage and age are just two of a whole list of things to look at before buying.

Nah, my first one was "a fight in a paintshop" - Chickenstrip. My second is a blend of Burgundy and purple - a colour in between.

Agreed.

I mean, I've only did 1300 miles on my KTM year one, and 550 miles year two; year 3 is looking like a bit of a blow out too since I'm just 500 miles up on the mileage it had clocked at last MOT and about 400 of those were done in 2 days this weekend Rolling Eyes

I've noticed at work and at home that a machine used regularly is more dependable than one used rarely. Not excluding the 2015, 600-miler but 4000 miles is nothing.

Other considerations might be;

Arrow colour (green ones are faster Wink ),
Arrow miles to next service, and cost of that,
Arrow can you use the existence of one advertised bike to drive down the price of the other, based upon the pros and cons of each?

Condition!

And yeah a regular used and we'll maintained bike that's seen some use will always be more reliable than an unproven garage Queen! And putting the garage Queen into service will take longer to expose any faults or issues it might have.

On a well used bike you might notice for example a leaky coolant hose, split header tank or holed radiator etc. The shiny bike in the garage that looks stunning but hasn't been used for ages, well the cooling system hasn't been put under pressure so that dodgy hose might not split until your 10th ride down the motorway etc.

Anything thats been sat around for years needs time to sort out niggles and prove itself capable of regular reliable service.

Owner probably took it out a few times, got scared shitless by witless asshole Florida drivers and was reluctant to take it too far!

And because Florida, go for the one that still has tread on the tires!

Well, that was the 'in' style for a while. Not your fault.

I liked the metallic purple ... the shopping list on the side and all the stickers just came along with it Smile

I can't really talk. My H2 was metallic purple with a big pink stripe down the tank, and to this day, I'll swear blind it's the only colour to have one in Smile

Otoh (here we go again!), my brother had a Mk1 Escort painted metallic purple, with black imitation fur seats. I can't help but think someone was right when they tipped it over into a ditch Laughing
