Fitted a new chain today, used a DID rip off tool for riveting and gotta say I was very impressed with it.

Just wanted some thoughts on whether these pins are rolled out enough or if they should be a bit more flared. According to the instructions that came with the tool they're pretty much bob on but looking at the master link in my removed chain they seem way flatter, don't want to risk cracking the pins if they're pressed a decent amount already.

What are the thoughts of the BCF gurus?

You only need to flare it enough that the plate can't come off. There's very little sideways force on the chain so it doesn't take a lot.

Last time I fitted a DID soft link I'm pretty sure it came with instructions for how wide the flaring should be. If you have a vernier caliper, see if it is wide enough.

From the photo it looks like it needs it an extra twist on the riveter. If the original master link was a riveted hard link or part of an endless chain you would expect it to look different.

Thanks guys, will purchase myself a set of vernier calipers and check it, DID guide states should be a 5.4 - 5.6mm spread. Pretty sure I'm at that already but will double check.

Cos the DID guide stated that if the riveting head touches the plate after pressing then you're golden. It touches but the consensus seems to be that they need spreading a bit more.

Besides been out for an hour on it and chain still on so reckons I got the skills Thumbs Up

Well you are, at the least, a little short on Tact.

Looks shit and way off centre in my opinion, but it will probably do the job if it is otherwise within spec. Inspect it closely on the thin sides to be sure it has not cracked.

Alternatively you could use the nut and bolt approach.
