Has anyone done this before?

There’s a motor in a car park near me, that’s been there for some time. It is showing clear signs of abandonment (i.e. flat tyres, moss on the ground around the shape of the car etc.) Car Park is for an international hub, so quite common for people moving overseas/going back home to leave cars behind.

I’ve checked the number plate on DVLA and the car is showing untaxed and no MOT since 2016.

I know that it is possible to apply to DVLA to have the V5 transferred to my name, following reasonable attempts to contact the owner, but that would only make me the registered keeper, and not necessarily the registered owner.

Before I start paying for HPI checks, and writing letters to the owner/ DVLA etc. Is it more hassle than it’s worth, or just a long winded paperwork exercise? (I know some will say this is dependant on the value of the vehicle, and the motor is an unknown quantity, but I can’t see the harm in at least trying)

You can't take ownership of a motor even if it is in a car park near you.

Trying to put something to good use that would otherwise be left to rot sitting around in the neighbourhood.

What’s wrong with trying to repurpose things? Rolling Eyes

Clearly a non-starter here, so I’ll leave it alone.

Repurposed??? Is that some word you made up to make yourself believe you're not stealing someones vehicle??
If not I may pop to the building society with a chair leg in a bag and repurpose some of their £50 notes into an H2.

So what if it is neglected? As long as it's not on a public highway then it can quite legally be untaxed and uninsured
provided a SORN has been completed. I could have an untaxed and uninsured vehicle on my driveway, does that
mean it's ok for you to come along and help yourself to it?? I rather suspect it's in an allocated parking space that
is affiliated with a nearby property. So effectively their driveway then.

Stick to going through the bins behind Greggs if you want to explore your freegan side, you might be able to repurpose
that garbage they sell into actual food. Just leave peoples property neglected or otherwise alone. It can be a very
quick route to a bump on the head if the owner should spot you being interested in their stuff. You never know what
kind of axe wielding, staffy owning, drug addled nutter with anger issues and poor impulse control might own it.

Yeah I definitely understand that, and wouldn’t even consider trying to sneakily/forcefully take it away from the rightful owner.

It was fanciful idea, that hasn’t lasted long.

Maybe report it to the local fire service as a potential training prop.
There
was a vehicle parked in the car park of flats I lived at.

I saw someone picking bits off it one day so called the cops.
"Is he acting suspiciously?" the lady asked me.

Shocked

No action by cops.

Two days later the fire brigade visited to see how long it would take to put out the flames as some wee cnuts had torched it.

The mess may have been avoided if the cooncil could have lifted the vehicle.

I never believed that the PoPo would ever Prevent Crime after that. Smile

I don't think it's legitimate to have an uninsured vehicle in a public car park.

Your drive is a completely different matter.

However, I tend to agree about taking someone else's property Smile

Correct. Tax and MOT are public road offences. Insurance is a public place, I.e. anywhere the public have an unrestricted right of access, whether by payment or otherwise.

You can apply to the DVLA for the log book pay the fees and if the registered keeper doesn't object you will be sent a new V5, you would then be the registered keeper of the vehicle.

But as the V5 states the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner of the vehicle

Which means when the legal owner gets out of prison/back from his tour of duty or whatever he's been up to for the last few year, he will be perfectly entitled to come and find his vehicle and possibly report it stolen too.

How do you prove you are the legal owner?

On these 'Can't pay' programmes they are quick enough to say V5 does not prove ownership yet if it's your name on the V5 they will happily repossess it unless you can prove otherwise.

I have a written receipt from the previous owner of my C Max that I could have written yesterday as it's from a private person and not a company.

In the same way Renton could 'forge' a receipt easily enough with a computer and printer.

Just asking

for when I claim neighbours brand new mobility car Whistle

V5 denotes that you are responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle. Thats all. Says so on the front of it.

I was on a car forum a few years ago where someone did, after finding out it was abandoned and had been for some time on a bit of scrubland used for parking near his flat apply for the logbook of a Sierra RS Cosworth.

He did get the logbook, move the car and do it up, putting a personalised plate on it.

Legally, as has been said, the V5c is not proof of ownership, but of liability for the vehicle.

not sure if he did manage to make contact with the previous owner or not

Imagine the owner is in prison for a very violent assault. Now imagine what would happen if he finds you driving around in his car...

I'm sure there was a thread like this about 18 months ago, except it was a bike the OP had seen from work.
Not sure on the outcome but i'm pretty convinced it ended up with OP not getting the bike and/or flouncing

I think I remember the thread. Didn’t it end end with bike getting damaged, maybe a puncture, then being repaired the next day?

That's not a great comparison actually. Yes, you could indeed do that, thereby becoming a squatter. If the owner of the property doesn't pitch up within 10 years to claim it - kerching, it's yours.

Property laws are not all the same.

They even abandoned slavery in the modern world.

You can inform DVLA.

Possibly abandoned reported stolen.

I wish we could leave this sort of shite on MP streets. Gee the cnuts up a wee bit.
